HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/3/2002 - STAFF REPORTS (8) DATE: April 3, 2002 TO: City Council FROM: Police Chief and Director of Procurement & Contracting APPROVE PURCHASE OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL EMITTERS RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council approve the purchase of fifty-four (54) new traffic signal emitters on a sole source basis from 3M of St Paul, MN in the amount of$57,894.08 for use on Police Department patrol vehicles. SUMMARY: Purchase of this equipment will allow the Police Department to respond to calls more safely and quickly. BACKGROUND: Safety service providers are increasingly utilizing a device called an optical preemption transmitter when responding to calls for service. The device preempts traffic signals, turning the signals green in the direction of travel of the emergency responder. This allows the responder to get to the scene more quickly and with less risk of collision due to reduced or eliminated cross-traffic. The Fire Department currently is utilizing 3M preemptive devices. This purchase would equip the Police Department with identical equipment. This equipment is available only from the manufacturer 3M. The devices will be installed by staff of the City's Fleet Operations Division. Funds are available in Police Grants, FY 01-02 Federal LLEB Grant Account, # 3201-52042. IkL Harold E.
