FEDERAL GRANT ACCEPTANCE - SECURITY
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to accept a
Federal Grant on behalf of the City for reimbursement of post 9/11 airport security
costs.
SUMMARY:
This action will result in the Airport receiving reimbursement for security costs
mandated post 9/11.
BACKGROUND:
As part of the Federal Defense Department Appropriations Bill, $175 million was set
aside to reimburse airports for a portion of the added security costs mandated post
9/11. The Airport submitted a grant request for $831,756, The federal government
determined that since there was not enough money to fully reimburse all airports,
small hub airports would rec6ve 50% of the eligible costs that they submitted grants
for. Palm Springs was allocated approximately $415,878. In our budget recovery
plan we had hoped for $250,000, so we are somewhat better off than originally
projected.
As we do not know the exact dollar amount we will be offered, the attached Minute
Order is for up to the full amount we asked for to ensure we meet the short
acceptance window provided in the grant.
