HomeMy WebLinkAbout5/1/2002 - STAFF REPORTS (9) DATE: May 1, 2002 i TO: City Council FROM: Director of Procurement and Contracting and Fire Chief APPROVE PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION OF REPLACEMENT APPARATUS DOORS AT VARIOUS FIRE STATIONS RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council approve the purchase and installation of replacement apparatus doors at Fire Stations 3, 4, and 5 by Door Service Company of Palm Springs, CA in the amount of$28,650.00 to replace existing failing doors. SUMMARY: The apparatus doors at Fire Stations 3, 4 and 5 are old and can no longer be maintained in adequate operating condition. Informal bids were solicited from all local suppliers dealing in such equipment, and approval for purchase from the low bidder is recommended. BACKGROUND: The roll-up "apparatus' doors at Fire Stations 3, 4 and 5 no longer can be maintained in adequate operating condition. The tracks, rollers and motors are worn and replacement parts are often extremely difficult to locate. Because these doors control fire apparatus egress and ingress from these stations, adequate operating condition is essential in order to provide timely emergency response. The doors at Fire Stations 1 and 2 have already been replaced. Informal bids were solicited from all local suppliers of roll-up/apparatus doors. Three responses were received. The calculated cost per station for new apparatus doors is as follows: Door Service Company $9,550 per station; Overhead Door Company $10,195 per station; and James Simon Company $10,505 per station. Staff recommends approval to acquire the needed doors from Door Service Company of Palm Springs in the total amount of$28,650.00. Funds have been budgeted and are available in the following account : 5904-53013, Fire Station Apparatus Doors Account. HAROLD E.
