TO City Council
FROM: Director of the Downtown Development Center
CLOSURE OF VILLAGEFEST ON JULY 4TH HOLIDAY
RECOMMENDATION:
That City Council direct VillageFest staff to not hold this event on Thursday,
July 4, 2002 due to: 1) a schedule conflict with the City's Fourth of July
Celebration and fireworks show at Sunrise Park; 2) a shortage of
VillageFest vendors able to participate on this date; and 3) the
extraordinary burden of staff cost to hold this event on a Holiday.
SUMMARY:
July Fourth falls on Thursday this year and, if held, VillageFest would
compete for attendance with the City's celebration and fireworks show
scheduled at Sunrise Park from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on that date. Further,
in response to a survey conducted by VillageFest staff, only 16 currently
approved VillageFest vendors have indicated that they would participate in
the event on July 4. Finally , if VillageFest were to be held on July 4, the
event would have to pay double time and a half for staff and this would
create a financial burden on the event, particularly with so few vendors
willing to participate on that date and pay booth space rental fees. This
recommendation was to be reviewed with the VillageFest Board on May
28 with the resulIq
to be reported to City Council on May 29.

OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS,
CALIFORNIA, DIRECTING VILLAGEFEST STAFF TO NOT HOLD
THIS EVENT ON JULY 4, 2002 DUE TO: A CONFLICTING
EVENT SCHEDULE; ANTICIPATED LOW PARTICIPATION BY
