HomeMy WebLinkAbout8/21/2002 - STAFF REPORTS (3) DATE: August 21, 2002 TO: City Council FROM: Director of Public Works/City Engineer TAHQUITZ CANYON WAY TRAFFIC SIGNAL INTERCONNECT RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council approve Contract Change Order No. 1 with DBX, Inc., for an increase of$28,600.00, for a total contract amount of$783,903.00, for the Tahquitz Canyon Way Traffic Signal Interconnect Project, City Project No. 00-05. SUMMARY: Contract Change Order No. 1 will allow for the installation of a fiber optic line from Palm Canyon Drive to the Police Department Communications Center for future communication abilities between the Downtown area and the Police Department. BACKGROUND: City Project No. 00-05 was awarded by the City Council at its June 19, 2002, meeting, with construction scheduled to commence on September 9, 2002. The project, located on Tahquitz Canyon Way between Palm Canyon Drive and El Cielo Road, includes traffic signal modifications at the signalized intersections along this corridor, as well as installation of a new signal at Tahquitz Canyon Way and El Cielo. Additionally, all of the signals along this traffic corridor will be interconnected to provide for improved traffic signal timing coordination and traffic flow. The construction bids received limited the Council's award of this project to exclude extra work from the contract related to a future fiber optic communications system. However, Engineering staff consulted with the Director of Information Technology and the Contractor, and obtained a cost to install a fiber optic communication line within the traffic signal interconnect conduit to be installed as part of this project along Tahquitz Canyon Way. The Director of Information Technology, in coordination with the Police Department, have identified a funding source for the proposed change order to add the fiber optic line communication system work to this project. Sufficient funds are available in account no. 261-3201-52043 (Police St. LLEBG 01-02). SUBMITTED: -- DAVID J.
