Attention: Mr. Ken Feenstra
SUBJECT: Soils Engineering Services, Proposed Three Story Concrete Parking
Structure, Palm Springs , California.
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request, we have made a visual inspection of the site
for the proposed parking structure. Our inspection and experience in the
area indicate that the site will be underlain by medium dense to dense, silty
to slightly silty sands.
The intent of this inspection was to determine the approximate cost of a
soil investigation for the subject development.
Our inspection indicates that approximately three borings to a depth of approxi-
mately 60 feet and about five borings to a depth in the order of 20 feet will
be necessary to obtained the required information.
The scope of our investigation is intended to provide the following informa-
tion:
a) Physical characteristics of the prevailing soils.
b) Supporting capacities and settlement characteristics of the foun-
dation soils.
c) Design information regarding site preparation.

d) Design information regarding foundations which will include consideration
for spread footings, piles, or mat foundations.
e) Potential construction difficulties and recommendations concerning these
difficulties.
Due to the uncertainties connected with such an investigation, it is proposed
that our charges be based on hourly rates for engineering and geology services,
for field explorations, sampling and laboratory testing. With this in mind,
it is estimated that a soil investigation for the subject site will incur an
overall expenditure of between $3,800 and $4,200. This estimate is based upon
the above mentioned scope and our current Schedule of Fees. If either of these
items change, we reserve the right to review and resubmit this proposal .
In addition to the above, we have determined the approximate cost of an engineer-
inq geology investigation For the site. The intent of this investigation is to
determine the extent of possible geologic hazards which could adversely affect
the suitability of the project. The scone of this investigation is intended to
provide the following information:
a) Determine the proximity of major faults and/or conditions of seismic
activity to the site.
b) Examine local and regional geologic conditions which could influence
the seismicity of the site.
c) Consider historic and statistical seismicity pertinent to the proposed
development.
d) Utilize available literature and our experience in the area to assess
the geologic characteristics of the site and potential for damage due
to (1 ) sudden or slow slippage along a fault where surface rupture can
be expected within the life of the structure; (2) ground shaking; (3)
ground failure, such as subsidence, lateral spreading, lurching, dif-
Ferential compaction, ground cracking, and liquefaction; (4) flooding.
It should be noted that the seismic response of the soil profile or the on-site
determination of the shear wave velocities is not included within the above scope.
If this information is necessary, this office should be contacted for a revised
estimate of costs.
It is'estimated' that a geologic investigation for the subject site wi,l-1 incur, an
-overall expenditure of-between $800 and $1 ,000: This estimate is based upon 'the
above mentioned scope"'and ourc'urrent Schedule of Fees. If either of thes'a items
change, we reserve the right to review,,and resubmit this propo"sal .
All invoicing would be itemized in accordance with our current Schedule of Fees
and would reflect only the actual time and costs incurred. The cost of our ser-
vices will not be permitted to exceed the above maximum estimates without your
prior approval .

We assume that the site plans to be furnished for our use will show the loca-
tion of underground utility lines; hence, we will not be liable for damage to
any utility lines whose locations are not shown on these plans. Further, if
subsurface utilities are believed to exist beneath the site, representatives
of the utility companies should be present during site drilling.
If the above recommended scope and estimated costs meet with your approval ,
please sign the enclosed copy and return it to this office.
We will appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this project. If you
have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the undersigned.
Respectfully submitted,
