HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/6/2002 - STAFF REPORTS (16) DATE: November 6, 2002 TO: City Council FROM: Chief of Police Supplemental Law Enforcement Services Fund (SLESF) Grant RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council approve an expenditure plan for $100,000 from Supplemental Law Enforcement Services Fund (SLESF) Grant from the State of California. SUMMARY: Each year the Palm Springs Police Department receives funding from the State to supplement the Department's budget. No matching funds are required to obtain these funds. The funds will be used to make much needed improvements and expansions in the Jail and Crime Laboratory, to replace and upgrade existing equipment, and to purchase less than lethal weapons. BACKGROUND: The Palm Springs Police Department annually receives funds from the State to supplement the department's budget. These funds are distributed through the Counties in the state, and this year we have been awarded $100,000. In past years, no City Council action was necessary, however this year new requirements must be met prior to disbursement of the funds. It is proposed that the money will be used for: 1) Improvements and expansion in the Jail and Crime Laboratory. This could include: The locking systems in the jail which are 17 years old and in need of replacement, and the video monitoring system needs which needs repairs. 2) Equipment replacement and upgrades. 3) Purchase "Less Lethal" weapons. This could be used to replace the 37mm guns or to replace existing tasers. This request is to meet the requirements of SB 823, enacted in April 2002. This bill amended Government Code Sections 30061 and 30063 requiring City Councils to appropriate the funds exclusively for law enforcement. FISCAL IMPACT: None. No matching funds are required to obtain this grant.
