OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM
SPRINGS SUPPORTING THE INSTALLATION OF
A NUMBERED SIGNAGE PROGRAM ON
TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT MAJOR INTERSECTIONS
ON HIGHWAY 111 TO HELP GUIDE VISITORS.
WHEREAS, tourism is a basic component of our economy and affects every resident and
business in the Coachella Valley; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the Coachella Valley each year; and
WHEREAS, these visitors are generally unfamiliar with the area and don't know when they
leave one city and enter another; and
WHEREAS, visitors currently have to rely on street names and key landmarks to find their way;
and
WHEREAS, reliance on street names and key landmarks can be confusing for some visitors,
especially foreign travelers who don't speak English, making it more difficult for them to reach
their final destination; and
WHEREAS, visitors that become confused or disoriented due to the lack of proper directions
tend to impede the flow of traffic; and
WHEREAS,, this can create dangerous traffic conditions resulting in a higher risk of traffic
accidents; and
WHERAS, the Palm Springs Desert Resorts Convention and Visitors Authority has proposed
the idea of installing sequentially numbered signs at all traffic lights on Highway 111 beginning
in Palm Springs through Indio to help guide visitors traveling throughout the Coachella Valley;
and
WHEREAS, numbered signs on traffic signals at major intersections are common in cities
throughout Europe and in certain metropolitan areas of the United States; and
WHEREAS, numbered signs on traffic signals provide a convenient point of reference and will
make it easier for visitors to find their way; and
WHEREAS, the Palm Springs Desert Resorts Convention and Visitors Authority, in conjunction
with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, has agreed to provide funding for this
program; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds that this program is in the public's best interest in that it will
help guide visitors and improve traffic flow along Highway 111; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs that it
hereby SUPPORTS the installation of a numbered signage program on traffic signals at major
intersections along Highway 111 to help guide visitors and promote a tourist friendly
environment.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council does hereby agree to participate with the
Palm Springs Desert Resorts Convention and Visitors Authority and the Coachella Valley
Association of Governments in the implementation of this program on traffic signals within its
corporate boundaries.
