TO: City Council
FROM: City Manager
SUBJECT: AMENDMENT#1 -ALLOCATED POSITIONS AND COMPENSATION
PLAN
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve Amendment#1 to the Allocated Positions and
Compensation Plan, adopted by Resolution #20358, authorizing the deletion one vacant Traffic
Maintenance Electrician position, and adding one Senior Traffic Maintenance Electrician
position. The total number of allocated positions of 459.50 remains unchanged.
SUMMARY:
This requested action would result in the first Amendment to the Allocated Positions and
Compensation Plan which would result in the deletion of one Traffic Maintenance Electrician
position and the addition of one Senior Traffic Maintenance Electrician position.
BACKGROUND:
The Public Works Department currently has two Traffic Maintenance Electrician positions, one
of which is currently vacant. This position does not require the necessary experience nor
knowledge that is required to maintain an extensive signal and lighting system such as we have
in Palm Springs. With more technologically advanced systems such as are coming on line with
our hard wire and spread spectrum interconnect systems and modern computers for controllers,
the maintenance requires a trained certified signal technician with a higher level qualifications
and ability. Assigning these tasks, along with the general maintenance tasks involving changing
lights, repainting, and cleaning signals, to a senior level electrician will allow for the
development of formal maintenance programs for all of the tasks involved.
Funds are available through salary savings as a result of staffing vacancies since the beginning
of FY 2002-2003.
A Resolution is attached for City Council consideration.
