APPROVAL OF THE FINAL PAYMENT OF THE TWO CHIHULY, INC., ARTWORK
INSTALLATIONS AT THE PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council accept the two sets of blown-glass sculptures located on the two
remaining pedestals around the interior fountain at the Palm Springs International Airport, and
approval of the final payment to Chihuly, Inc. in the amount of$50,000.
BACKGROUND:
The Public Arts Commission worked with the Airport Commission to provide world-class artwork
for the four pedestals around the fountain in the upstairs terminal at the Palm Springs
International Airport. In June 2001, two Chihuly glass sculptures were purchased by the Airport
and Arts Commission and placed on site in protective glass cases, which include lighting and a
security system.. The final two additional sets were installed on March 28, 2003 which
completes the project.
The payments for the second set of Chihuly, Inc. glass sculptures were to be made in three
$50,000 installments. A total of$133,925 was raised by the Public Arts Commission through
fund-raising efforts. The first two $50,000 installments were paid in November 2002 and March
2003, from the Chihuly Fund-Raising account. The final $50,000 installment is to be paid
partially from the fund-raising account ($33,925) and the balance of$16,075 will be paid through
the Public Arts Fund account#150-4408-50015. No general fund money has been used for this
project.
