HomeMy WebLinkAbout5/7/2003 - STAFF REPORTS (5) Date: May 7, 2003 To: City Council From: Director of Community& Economic Development APPROVAL OF THE FINAL PAYMENT OF THE TWO CHIHULY, INC., ARTWORK INSTALLATIONS AT THE PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council accept the two sets of blown-glass sculptures located on the two remaining pedestals around the interior fountain at the Palm Springs International Airport, and approval of the final payment to Chihuly, Inc. in the amount of$50,000. BACKGROUND: The Public Arts Commission worked with the Airport Commission to provide world-class artwork for the four pedestals around the fountain in the upstairs terminal at the Palm Springs International Airport. In June 2001, two Chihuly glass sculptures were purchased by the Airport and Arts Commission and placed on site in protective glass cases, which include lighting and a security system.. The final two additional sets were installed on March 28, 2003 which completes the project. The payments for the second set of Chihuly, Inc. glass sculptures were to be made in three $50,000 installments. A total of$133,925 was raised by the Public Arts Commission through fund-raising efforts. The first two $50,000 installments were paid in November 2002 and March 2003, from the Chihuly Fund-Raising account. The final $50,000 installment is to be paid partially from the fund-raising account ($33,925) and the balance of$16,075 will be paid through the Public Arts Fund account#150-4408-50015. No general fund money has been used for this project. IN THE AMOUNT OF $50,000 1 HEREBY CERTIFY that the Minute Order accepting the two sets of blown-glass sculptures located on the two remaining pedestals around the interior fountain at the Palm Springs International Airport, and approval of the final payment to Chihuly, Inc. in the amount of$50,000 was adopted by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California, in a meeting thereof held on the 7`h day of May, 2003.
