WHO Graduating seniors from 24 high schools featuring Desert Valley League (Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs) and the DeAnza League (Banning, Beaumont, Big Bear, Notre Dame of Riverside, San Jacinto, Twenty-nine Palms, Yucca Valley) will oppose the Sun Belt League (Elsinore, Hemet, Paloma Valley of Menefee, Perris, West Valley of Hemet) and the Southwestern League (Chaparral of Temecula, Murrieta Valley, Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley, Temecula Valley, Temescal Canyon of Elsinore). Each school will have a minimum of one representative in all games with a maximum number ranging from two to five depending upon the sport. Football will have 40 players per team; 15 each for boys and girls basketball; 20 for baseball and softball. WHEN & WHERE Beginning July 10-11-12 in 2003: Thursday (baseball/softball at Angel Stadium in Palm Springs); Friday (College of the Desert, Palm Desert); Saturday (football at Palm Springs High School). _. WHY To benefit Foundation of the Retarded of the Desert, a non-profit charity that operates facilities in Palm Desert and Temecula. HONORARY CHAIRPERSONS Three outstanding sportsmen have agreed to serve as honorary chairpersons, one for each sport. They are: Football: Tom Flores, NFL quarterback for Kansas City and the Raiders, coach of the Raiders and Seattle Seahawks. Baseball: Tom Haller, catcher and manager of the San Francisco Giants, Basketball: Stu Lantz, announcer for the Lakers, former All -American at U. of Nebraska, NBA player with the San Diego and Houston Rockets SELECTIONS There will be more than 200 athletes competing including 65 players and 4 head coaches from the Coachella Valley High Schools: Cathedral City 13, 1 coach Indio 13, 1 coach Palm Desert 13, 1 coach La Quinta 12, 1 coach Palm Springs 6, Desert Hot Springs 5, Coachella Valley 3 FROM,: PSWINDSURFING PHONE NO. : 760 325 7146 Jun. 30 2003 03:11PM P2 June 10, 2003 David Ready City Manager City of Palm Springs 3200 E, Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92264 Dear David: State and county budgets cuts of $1.1 million and the rising cost of workmen's compensation have left the Foundation of the Retarded with the awesome task of compensating for the loss of these funds. We are trying to do everything in our power to meet the short fall including staging the first High School All Star Classic in the Coachella Valley. It's a three- day event featuring the graduated seniors from 24 high schools. They will compete on July 10-11 and 12 in football, baseball, softball and boys and girls basketball. Two of the events: baseball/softball at Municipal Stadium on July 10 and football at Palm Springs High School on July 12—will be held in the city. Not only are these events a possible fundraiser, but also they offer much needed rewards, participation and an attraction for the city's youth. We are asking the City of Palm Springs to contribute in kind services of four (4) Police officers for a four-hour shift from 6:30 to 10:30 p,m. Saturday, July 12 to act as security for the football game. We appreciate your time and consideration. I HEREBY CERTIFY that this Minute Order, approving in kind services for Police support, in the amount of $880, for the High School All -Star Football Game, on July 12, 2003, benefiting the Foundation of the Retarded of the Desert, was adopted by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, California, in a meeting thereof held on the 91h day of July, 2003.
