HomeMy WebLinkAbout7/23/2003 - STAFF REPORTS (3) DATE: July 23, 2003 TO: City Council FROM: Executive Director -Airports AIRLINE REIMBURSEMENTS - BAG BELTS RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council authorize the City Manager to approve reimbursements to the signatory airlines for the cost of installing outbound automated bag belts on a first-come first-serve basis related to the Explosive Detection System (EDS) up to a total of$150,000. SUMMARY: This action would increase baggage handling efficiency and allow for timely completion of the airport's EDS project this summer. BACKGROUND: The EDS modifications that are being installed this summer include non-automated bag belts (roller beds) for the movement of baggage after it has been put through the EDS machines. Several of the airlines have expressed concern that the non- automated system will result in baggage bottlenecks and may cause flight delays. The airport has $150,000 left in its EDS budget and request that the funds be set aside to reimburse the airlines for outbound baggage belt improvements on a first- come basis until the funds are gone. The airlines have existing contracts for such belt systems and can move quickly enough to meet our schedule. Funds are available in airport account no. 415-6400-56057 "EDS Facility Expansion." A minute order is attached for City Council consideration. Allen F. Smoot, A. A. E. Executive Director - Airports APPROVED City Manage Attachment: 1. Minute Order MINUTE ORDER NO.
