HomeMy WebLinkAbout8/13/2003 - STAFF REPORTS (5) DATE: August 13, 2003 TO. City Council FROM: Director of Public Works/City Engineer SPEED CUSHION PURCHASE RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council authorize the purchase of rubberized speed cushions from Lake Traffic Solutions in the amount of $36,354.85 for installation at various locations as part of the City of Palm Springs Traffic Calming Program. SUMMARY: Purchase of the rubberized speed cushions will allow staff to implement approved traffic calming measures for the South Mesquite Country Club, Tennis Club and Sagewood neighborhoods. BACKGROUND: Since approval of the City of Palm Springs Traffic Calming Program, staff has successfully implemented various traffic calming measures throughout the City to alleviate concerns such as traffic speed, traffic volumes, and cut-through traffic. Recently, three neighborhood areas have pursued solutions to their traffic related problems: South Mesquite Country Club, Tennis Club, and Sagewood neighborhoods. All of these neighborhoods shared similar concerns with cut-through traffic and traffic speed. The South Mesquite Country Club neighborhood identified Sonora Road from Sunrise Way to El Cielo Road as a traffic concern; the Tennis Club neighborhood identified Cahuilla Road from Tahquitz Canyon Way to Ramon Road as a traffic concern; and the Sagewood neighborhood identified Cerritos Road from Vista Chino to Tachevah Drive as a traffic concern. Following the process outlined in the City's Traffic Calming Program, It was determined that installation of rubberized traffic "speed cushions" would likely solve the neighborhood's complaints regarding traffic speed and "cut-through" traffic. Following implementation of this traffic calming measure, it is reasonable to expect that traffic speeds will decrease, as well as the volume of "cut-through" traffic using these streets as a short cut to other destinations. Sufficient funds are available from the gas tax fund account number 133-4298-50190 (Resid Traffic Speed Reduc). SUBMITTED: APPROVED: DAVID J. BARAKIAN DAVID H.
