HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/3/2003 - STAFF REPORTS (7) DATE: September 3, 2003 TO: City Council FROM: Executive Director-Airports AIRPORT PUBLIC ART PLACEMENT - 'PATH OF THE BIGHORN' RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council approve placement of two (2) Bighorn Sheep sculptures sponsored by the Bighorn Institute and private investors as a public art project preserving the legacy of the endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep. SUMMARY: The Path of the Bighorn Sheep is a valley-wide tourism effort to draw national and international exposure to the Palm Springs Desert Resort communities. BACKGROUND: This public art program is similar to other public art programs in other cities such as the Chicago Cows, Sante Fe Ponies and the Los Angeles Angels. The Bighorn Institute is launching a valley-wide public art project featuring painted bighorn sheep sculptures to raise awareness of the endangered animals. Several public and tourist related agencies are expected to take part in this valley-wide program. The art project calls for a trail of life-size fiberglass Peninsular bighorn sheep placed in high-visibility locations throughout the desert resort communities. The "Path of the Bighorn" was prompted by internationally renowned sculptor Joe Wertheimer who created the model of the sheep. It has already attracted some major names in the world of art and many private investors are making donations to this program. The Airport will receive 2 of the original sculptures which have a value of $4,000 unpainted. The 2 painted original sculptures are titled as follows: 1) "Welcome to Palm Springs", and 2) "Bighorn Springs". The proposed placement location is expected to be in the rock areas immediately adjacent to the escalators that lead to the Sonny Bono concourse. The Airport and Public Arts Commissions have approved the proposed locations.
