HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/5/2003 - STAFF REPORTS (20) DATE: November 5, 2003 TO: City Council FROM: Executive Director -Airports VISITOR CENTER - INTERIOR MATERIAL CHANGE ADDED STARTER: Subsequent to the posting of the agenda the Visitor Center Project Administration staff as well as the Tourism Department raised concerns overthe material specified for the wall behind the new Visitor Center desks and in order to maintain current deadlines require City Council direction. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council authorize a material change for the wall behind the Visitor Center desks. BACKGROUND: The new Visitor Center project includes a large covered wall behind the main desks in the Visitor Center. The original design had opaque glass covering the wall. The first time City Council told the design team to reduce costs this glass was eliminated and a substitution of a translucent plexiglass material was included. The material has now arrived on-site and a portion has been installed. Staff does not believe it provides the quality of backdrop that the City Council envisioned that the visitors would first see. Prior to the actual City Council meeting staff will have the cost of utilizing painted drywall or a wood panel to match the work station as a substitute. The small contingency, developed by cutting the project, has been exhausted so additional funding would be necessary for this change. Should City Council agree with the change staff will be prepared to suggest a funding source. APPROVE. ALLEN F. SMOOT, A. A. E. City an Executive Director - Airports Attachment: 1. Minute Order (at meeting) Ya DATE: November 5, 2003 TO: City Council FROM: Executive Director -Airports SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT TO VISITOR CENTER ADDED STARTER The two (2) options to replace the translucent plexiglass on the back wall are: (1) Drywall and Paint $3,256 plus five (5) days extra (2) Baltic Birch $8,572 plus twelve (12) days extra Staff recommends the drywall and paint approach in order to stay as close as possible to the original schedule. If at a later date an upgrade is desirable the birch can be put over the drywall. Staff has reviewed the current change orders, the contingency account, and the status of the Fontana contract. With a probable under-run of$5,000 on the Fontana contract staff believes the cost increase can be covered. LXy r 1 ALLEN F. SMOOT, A. A. E. Executive Director - Airports
