Trump Productions and NBC Television expressed their interest to the hospitality community of Palm Springs with the opportunity to host the 2003 Miss Teen USA Pageant. Recognizing the media potential of this event, the hotels and attractions of Palm Springs embraced the offer and extended over $200,000 of in kind contributions to ensure our destination was selected by the promoter. This city also participated by providing the convention center. This event proved to exceed our expectations. It brought an estimated 3,000 room nights. In terms of publicity, Palm Springs received nine minutes of prime time media exposure, televised on nationally and internationally to over sixty countries; valued at $3.8 million. This year, the Miss Universe Organization; parent company of Miss Teen USA, is requiring a "site fee" to cover production costs. The fee is generally in the range of $200,000 to $500,000 and cities across America are willing to subsidize this amount to ensure their destination is prominently exhibited on national and international television. Once again, the hospitality community is willing to donate the same amount of"in kind" contributions as last year; over$200,000 complimentary room nights, food & beverage, meeting space, etc. Additionally in 2004, each contracted hotel will give $20.00 per room night to the Miss Universe Organization for an estimated amount of$30,000 for a total donation of$230,000. This event is planned to take place in August 2004 and show the activities of our city in a very positive light. However, the $230,000 committed by the hospitality community is not sufficient. Therefore, we are respectfully requesting an additional $75,000 from the city of Palm Springs. This small contribution by the city will ensure our destination is selected and once more receive national and international television exposure to promote the wonderful attractions our city has to offer. I look forward to presenting this opportunity in person and answer any questions you may have about this uniquely beneficial opportunity for Palm Springs.
