SUMMARY: Each year the United States Department of Justice awards funding to cities to purchase National Institute of Justice (NIJ) approved bulletproof vests for full-time and Reserve Police Officers. The funding is awarded based on the population of the requesting jurisdictions. This year the City of Palm Springs was awarded $26,097.50, to pay for no more than 50 percent of the total cost of the vests to be purchased (115). The industry standard for the safe use of bulletproof vests is five years. After five years the vest materials begin to deteriorate. The most recent Department vest purchase occurred over five years ago. The cost of replacement vests for all full-time and Reserve officers is approximately $57,500. For this year's purchase only, matching funds will be contributed by the Palm Springs Police Officers' Association (PSPOA) and the 100 Club. The PSPOA and the 100 Club will contribute $15,700 each, for a total of $31,400, in order to achieve the total cost of the vests. FISCAL IMPACT: None. Matching funds will be contributed by the PSPOA and the 100 Club. r' Gary J n Chief Pt ce Approved: David R it anager Attachments: 1. Minute Order MINUTE ORDER NO.
