TO: CITY COUNCIL
FROM: CHIEF OF POLICE
AMENDMENT#1 -ALLOCATION POSITIONS AND COMPENSATION PLAN 2004 - 2005
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve Amendment #1 to the Allocated
Positions and Compensation Plan, adopted by Resolution #20974, authorizing the
deletion of one Family Intervention Police Officer position and the addition of one Family
Intervention Officer civilian position.
SUMMARY:
This requested action would be the first amendment to the Allocation Positions and
Compensation Plan for 2004-2005, which would result in the deletion of one police officer
position for the Family Intervention program and the addition of a civilian to become the
Family Intervention Officer. The total number of allocation positions For the Police
Department remains unchanged.
BACKGROUND:
The Family Intervention Police Officer position was created last year and funded by a
federal grant. The rising costs of benefits make it impossible for the grant to pay the
salary and benefits of a police officer for the term of the 3-year grant. By replacing that
police officer position with a civilian position, the funding will remain intact and this
valuable program can continue and meet the terms of the grant.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The deletion of one Family Intervention Police Officer position and the addition of one
civilian Family Intervention Officer position would result in a salary savings of $63,736.00
annually to the federal grant. The grant is administered by the Palm Springs Unified
School District. There would be no impact to the existing budget.
