Dear Members of City Council, 1 understand that it has been suggested that Airport Road be renamed Kirk Douglas Boulevard. Kirk has been an outstanding citizen of this community for over z`orty years and 1 think that a,street named in his honor would be a tribute-. to Palau Springs. 5" erel J'� RESOLUTION NO.',- OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS CALIFORNIA, CHANGING THE STREET NAME MID-VALLEY PARKWAY AT THE PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO KIRK DOUGLAS WAY WHEREAS, Kirk Douglas is a distinguished actor, director, writer, and producer who has brought us more memorable performances on stage and screen than nearly anybody else for the past 60 years; WHEREAS, his films have included Paths of Glory (1957), Spartacus (1960), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), The Airangement (1969), The Fury (1978), The Man from Snowy River (1982), Tough Guys (1986), and Greedy(1994); WHEREAS, his most critically acclaimed role as an actor was Lust for Life (1956), which earned him one of three Oscar nominations and a New York Film Critics Award; WHEREAS, in 1999, Kirk Douglas received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute; WHEREAS, he has also written several books including his best-selling autobiography "The Ragman's Son", "The Gift", "Climbing the Mountain: My Search for Meaning", "The Secret", "The Broken Mirror: A Novella", "Last Tango in Brooklyn", "Dance with the Devil" and "Kirk Douglas's Young Heroes'; WHEREAS, Kirk Douglas served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the State Department and received numerous awards for his efforts; WHEREAS, in 1981, he was honored by President Jimmy Carter with the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest US honor a civilian can receive; WHEREAS, in 2002, President George W. Bush presented Kirk Douglas the National Medal of Arts and the National Humanities Award; WHEREAS, Kirk Douglas has been a part-time resident of Palm Springs for nearly forty(40) years; WHEREAS, Streets and Highways Code Section 5026 provides that the City Council may, by resolution, change the name of any street located in the City of Palm Springs; WHEREAS, the Palm Springs Airport Commission, at their meeting of July 7, 2004, voted in support of renaming a segment of the Mid-Valley Parkway between El Cielo and Ramon Road to Kirk Douglas Way; and I a T� WHEREAS, the City Council desires to recognize Kirk Douglas for his creative excellence as a stage and screen actor, director, producer, writer and for his generous support of humanitarian efforts by renaming a street in his honor. NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Patin Springs that: I. The segment of the Mid-Valley Parkway between El Cielo and Ramon Road at the Palm Springs International Airport is hereby renamed Kirk Douglas Way. 2. The Public Works Department is instructed to install new roadway signs bearing the name Kirk Douglas Way at appropriate locations to identify this street. 3. The City Clerk is directed to file a certified copy of this resolution with the Riverside County Board of Supervisors and any other appropriate government agency. ADOPTED this day of 2004.
