TAHQUITZ RIVER ESTATES TRAFFIC CALMING
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that City Council approve the purchase of rubberized speed cushions
for Riverside Drive South and San Lorenzo Road in the amount of$31,800.
SUMMARY:
Approval of this item will provide for the purchase of rubberized speed cushions for
installation on Riverside Drive South and San Lorenzo Road, This installation follows the
procedures outlined in the Traffic Calming Program. The Tahquitz River Estates
neighborhood has met with Staff over the last year and a half. The neighborhood working
group has approved of a series of rubberized speed cushions which were subsequently
approved by a vote of the neighborhood with 62% in favor.
BACKGROUND.-
In 2002 City Council approved a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program. Underthe terms
of this program, the Tahquitz River Estates neighborhood formed a working group. The
neighborhood working groupwas formed, headed by block co-captains, Leonard Colombo
and Marc Hampton. The group was formed to deal with the problem of cut through and
speeding traffic on Riverside Drive South and San Lorenzo Road. Studies performed by
City Staff documented that both problems exist with the 8Vh percentile speed at 16 miles
per hour over the 25 mph speed limit.
Under terms of the Program, Staff metwith the neighborhood working group several times
and the group decided upon a series of rubberized speed cushions on Riverside Drive
South, as well as on San Lorenzo Road (replacing the asphalt speed bumps put on San
Lorenzo Road a few years ago that have been worn down). We have therefore
recommended the rubberized speed cushions to be installed at four locations on each of
these two streets.
Subsequent to the groups' determination and in accordance with the Program, a mailing
was made to the entire neighborhood between South Palm Canyon Drive and Sunrise
Way, north of Mesquite Avenue and south of Sunny Dunes Road. The proposal of the
neighborhood working group received 62% approval from the neighborhood respondents
to the mailing. However, it should be noted that only 42 responses were received out of
the total of 288 properties mailed to.
