June 16, 2008 The Honorable Alex Padilla Senate District 20 State Capitol, Room 4032 Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: SUPPORT FOR SIB 1646 Dear Senator Padilla: I am pleased to advise you that the Palm Springs City Council has approved this letter to express strong support for your proposed legislation, SB 1646, which would reauthorize the South Coast Air Quality Management District's (SCAQMD's) Clean Fuels Program which is scheduled to sunset in 2010. With this program over the past two decades, the SCAQMD has effectively leveraged $140 million in Clean Fuels Fund to obtain over $48 million in matching funds from the private sector and other partners to research, demonstrate, and commercialize clean fuels projects that have produced significant emissions reductions in the District. While the South Coast Air Basin has made great strides in improving its air quality over the past twenty years, the region is still one of the most polluted in the nation. It is critical that the Clean Fuels Program be reauthorized in order to provide the funds necessary to address and implement programs to improve air quality. Thank you for your leadership in the reauthorization effort for this critical program that can significantly improve the health and the quality of life for the residents of the Coachella Valley. The City of Palm Springs supports this legislation and stands ready to assist you in your efforts to bring the Valley cities cleaner, healthier air. Sincerely, Steve Pougnet Mayor ITEM NO. %
