FROM: Director of Public Works/City Engineer
MOTORCYCLE PARKING ON AMADO ROAD
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve establishment of a motorcycle parking
zone on a six-month trial basis, for the north side of Amado Road between North Palm
Canyon Drive to a point 60 feet westerly thereof, between the hours of 6:OOpm on
Thursdays until 11:00pm on Sundays.
SUMMARY:
Approval of this item will provide exclusive motorcycle parking along the north curb of
Amado Road adjacent to Rage Clothing and the Kickstand Grill & Bar. Restricted parking
will be from Thursdays at 6:00pm until Sundays at 11:00pm for a period of six-months, on
a trial basis. After the six-month period, staff will bring this item back to Council for further
consideration.
BACKGROUND:
City staff received a request from Johnny Wasko representing Rage Clothing and Mario
Gutierrez representing Kickstand Grill & Bar, that the first three vehicle parking spaces on
the north side of Amado Road west of Palm Canyon Drive be designated for motorcycle
parking only. Request is to assign this designation to be in effect from 6:OOpm Thursdays
until 11:00pm Sundays. The reasons given are: 1) both of the businesses cater to
motorcycle enthusiasts; 2) motorcycles are parked in this area every weekend; and 3) the
clientele for the businesses prefer to be able to park their motorcycles within site of the
establishments they are frequenting.
The request has been recommended for approval by Jerry Ogburn, as well as by
MainStreet at their November 4, 2004 Meeting. The recommendation is to establish this
motorcycle parking zone on a trial basis for a period of six-months. After that time, staff
will assemble any comments received during the trial basis and then return to Council with
a recommendation for further action. Further action could range from returning the area
back to general public parking to an establishment of motorcycle parking on a permanent
basis.
The business representatives have offered to pay the City's cost for making and installing
the signs. In accordance with Section 12.32 of the Palm Springs Municipal Code, City
Council must concur in establishment of specific parking designations on public streets.
Staff concurs with the request and recommends Council establish motorcycle parking on
a trial basis.
