DONATION TO PALM SPRINGS DESERT MUSEUM
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council approve the attached Minute Order authorizing the donation of the original
architectural drawings for the La Plaza located in the 100 block of South Palm Canyon Drive.
BACKGROUND
La Plaza was designed by Harry J. Williams and opened for business in 1936. It was one of the
first mixed-use shopping centers to be constructed in California. The property is a Class 1 Historic
Site and has all of the attributes of a National Register of Historic Places site.
The original working drawings are currently stored at City Hall. The drawings are in outstanding
condition and should be professionally archived and protected. Staff recommends that these
drawings/plans be donated to the Palm Springs Desert Museum.
Prior to January 5, 2005, staff will contact the Williams family and the Palm Springs Desert
Museum to verify the appropriateness of this recommendation.
