SINCE MXE PAT STU)M'PF PHONE (76o) 325-6993 Julio de la Pena, (of Guadalajara) - one of Mexico's greatest architects, (PAGE 7, created the beautiful fountain at Palm Springs airport as a gesture of friendship. Donated by Pearl McManus, it is one of the few things in the valley to bear her name rather than that of her father, John Guthrie McCallum. The fountain dedication took place on April 2, 1968 shortly after Pearl's death. Weighing over 40 tons, its 398 pieces were handmade from cantero stone from Jalisco, Mexico. The fountain sprays 800 gallons of water at a time. Many people have enjoyed this fountain and all the wonderful flowers. This beautiful fountain gives a delightful welcome to visitors thanks to Pearl! . Pearl also gave land for the "right-of-way" for the spacious boulevard leading from the airport to the center of Palm Springs. Her only request was that this avenue be called McCallum Way in honor of her father. The Indians likewise gave land through reservation territory, and when they asked that it be given an Indian name the hyphenated Taquitz-McCallum designation was given. of5/aa g eL.A F+pr 1. ti;3 E]G: 0] a Barbara Proctc ;F; -iE;- 117:J E . . 5 5m 96CCE'y 15:]] %hH32172d W11-'_14M5 F70YP PTi.C$ Fagg r r We, the tinder signed are requesting that. the Palm Springs City, Council ireconside; their motion to reannve Tile name of Pearl McCa]lum McManus from the fountain at the airport. This fountain was dedicated to this woman because she did so much for this city in it's early history and she also helped pay for it. Frank Bogert certainly was instrumental in getting the fountain built, but lets not forget that the fountain was meant to honor someone else. Would Mayor Steve Pougnet also suggest in the future for some reason to re-name streets(Gene Autry, Dinah Shore, Farrell Dr., Bogert Trail, Kirk Douglas Way etc.)to honor one of Palm Springs distinguished citizens? It is not right to change streets, public Fountains, plazas, parks etc. from their original dedicated names, especially when the name is an honored person, and not asking for input from the citizens of the city. Frank Bogert's statue is in front of city hall and there is a street named after him. I am not against honoring him more, but not at the expense of dishonoring another distinguished person. Please think this through and I am sure you will come up with a more dignified way of handling this unfortunate suggestion of Mayor Pougnet. c7 flelzao =ram 4/15/2009 RESOLUTION NO.
