BARISTO NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZATION April 15, 2009 TO: Mayor Steve Pougnet; Mayor Pro Tem Mills; Council members Foat, Hutcheson, Weigel; David Ready, City Manager Board of Advisors David Carden Jr_ RE: Baristo supports Plaza Racquet Club lease extension Chcir The Baristo neighborhood, as any neighborhood in Palm Springs, Dean noonkle ir is proud to have such a good neighbor as the Haggstrom's Plaza Racquet Club. Gayle Wilson tteosurer Before they took over the property five years ago the tennis club Don Shenefelf was blight along the Baristo corridor. It was neglected, full of Secretary over growth and the courts, fences and screens were in disrepair. Claudia Rossi At-lorge Today the Plaza Racquet Club is well maintained and a great William Squire asset to our neighborhood! At-large George Zander Many of our neighbors belong to the club and use the facilities. At-large We recognize the importance the tennis club offers to the youth of April Hildner our city and the tennis enthusiasts who stay in our hotels. ON[Alternate Mark Davis The Baristo Neighborhood Organization has worked hard in the HOA liaison past two years to clean up the Baristo corridor and the vacant lots within our boundaries. The Hagstrom's have been great supporters of our efforts to spruce up a once-neglected neighborhood! The Baristo Neighborhood Organization encourages our city leaders to do whatever it takes to ensure a lease extension for the Plaza Racquet Club —we cannot afford to have this property fall into disrepair again! APR D 6 2ua9 To:Mayor, City Council Palm Springs,CA It has come to my attention that the lease for the Plaza Racquet Club is coming up for renewal. This winter was the first in Palm Springs for my wife and I. We found the city delightful. More specifically,we found the Plaza Racquet Club delightfi4. Kurt and Anna nun a most professional tennis facility. It is warm and welcoming and host to a diversity of players of all ages. A feature of the club most appreciated by myself and I suspect, of other winter visitors is their game arranging program.Never have I seen such an efficient system of pairing players. Without it, we visitors would have a much harder time finding players. I would enthusiastically ask that their lease be renewed. It's continued presence in the city of Palm Springs can only have a healthy impact on the city. Sincerely. Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92262 Re: Plaza Racquet Club To the Mayor& City Council: On my recent visit to your beautiful City,I played tennis several times at Plaza Racquet Club. It was very distressing to learn that you are considering closing this very fmc tennis facility which I believe is well managed and very well maintained. While there, I was impressed with the commitment of the personnel backed by a very active tennis community. As I travel around the country and having been to many tennis facilities,I consider Plaza Racquet Club to be one of the best. I hope you and your Council Members will keep this high level, quality facility open as they are very deserving of remaining available for recreational, social and competitive tennis participants. Having this facility available is a credit to the City of Palm Springs. Sincerely, C''C'L vul Charles M. Polk mtn&L richer 4901 O-KeeW AVe. so. Tahquitz Canyon Way Palm Springs, CA 92262 Dear City Council Members, I am writing in support of the Plaza Racquet Club. I have been playing there for two years and would sorely miss it if it was forced to close! I don't think there is any other club like it in Palm Springs, giving it a very unique purpose. It's not just a tennis club! The way Curt and Ana run it, they provide the service of matching you with players at your level and setting up matches for you, They are extremely accommodating and friendly and have set the tone for all the players and members of the Club. The Plaza Racquet Club is a welcoming place to be and a place to make new friends. For all of these reasons, The Plaza is a huge asset to Palm Springs and is one of the reasons we bought our winter home there! ] urge you to do whatever is in your power to keep The Plaza Racquet Club functioning! It is our understanding that the City of Palm Springs is currently reviewing its lease agreement with the Palm Springs United School District in reference to the property that the Plaza Racquet Club currently occupies. The Plaza Racquet Club has been in operation for 26 years and is currently Palm Springs' only organized public tennis facility. Currently, the club, operated by Kurt and Ana Haggstrom, serves as the home courts to approximately 300 local full-time members, and over 6,000 out of town visitors annually. Each year, Plaza Racquet Club is the host site for many tennis tournaments (including those sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association(USTA) and Gay Lesbian Tennis Association(GLTA))that attract tennis players to our city 1i om tluoughout the nation_ Additionally, Plaza Racquet Club offers the only junior and in-school tennis programs in the city and serves as host to the Palm Springs High School's tennis teams. Plaza Racquet Club is an integral part of Palm Springs' recreational offering for residents as well as visitors. It is one of the only venues left to play tennis in a city where tennis was once its trademark. We, the undersigned, urge the City of Palm Springs to extend its lease beyond the contract expiration of June 2010. This lease extension can only be possible if the city of Palm Springs comes to an agreement with Palm Springs Unified School district who owns the property.
