SUBJECT: Acceptance of $36,975 in grant funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial
Justice Assistance Grant Program to fund a Youth Law Enforcement
Academy at the Palm Springs High School.

SUMMARY
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to accept $36,975
in Bureau of Justice Assistance federal grant funding for the Police Department to fund
a Youth Law Enforcement Academy at the Palm Springs High School. The total grant
amount will be $36,975.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Accept $36,975 in grant funding from the United States Bureau of Justice
Assistance.
2. Authorize the City Manager to execute all necessary documents.
STAFF ANALYSIS.
The Palm Springs Police Department would like offer a Youth Law Enforcement
Academy on the campus of the Palm Springs High School. The class would be offered
to high school students during their regular class schedules and students would earn
educational credits for attending. The concept has received the enthusiastic
endorsement of the Palm Springs High School Principal. The Academy would be
coordinated by the police officer assigned to the campus as the School Resources
Officer. The grant funding would be used to pay for lecturers from various areas of
expertise as well as for advertising, promotion, and materials.

This grant period duration is between 10/1/09 and 9/30/13.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None. This is a reimbursable cost grant program. No matching funds are required to
obtain this grant funding.
