HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/6/2005 - STAFF REPORTS (9) CITY COUNCIL APRIL 6, 2005 CONSENT CALENDAR Subject: AMENDMENT #6 TO ALLOCATED POSITIONS AND COMPENSATION PLAN FROM: David H. Ready, City Manager BY: Public Works Department— Fleet Operations Division SUMMARY: Request to City Council for approval of one (1) over hire of Fleet Maintenance Technician Il. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that City Council adopt the Resolution approving Amendment #6 to the Allocated Positions and Compensation Plan authorizing one (1) Fleet Maintenance Technician II over hire in the Fleet Operations Division of the Public Works Department. STAFF ANALYSIS: The Fleet Operations Division is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and replacement of all city vehicles and equipment including police and fire units. The total number of vehicles and equipment managed by the division today is 474 units. Due to a combination of circumstances, including efficiency improvements, budget deficits, retirements, re-organizations, and injuries, the number of assigned technicians today is four (4). Of the four (4) assigned technicians, two (2) are currently unavailable due to injury and are on Workers Compensation. One of the positions is likely not to return to active work status. To maintain the Division's ability to properly serve our fleet, the over hire position is necessary to bridge the gap created by injured employees. In the event the one injured employee returns to active status, the over hire would be re-evaluated and/or remedied through attrition. FISCAL IMPACT: The cost will be covered by savings in salary from the vacancies, as Workers Compensation payments are made through the Risk Management fund.
