HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/6/2005 - STAFF REPORTS (13) CITY COUNCIL April 6, 2005 CONSENT CALENDAR Subject: ACCEPTANCE OF DONATED VEHICLE FOR MOUNTED POLICE/SEARCH AND RESCUE UNIT Initiated by: Chief of Police SUMMARY: The Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit is an auxiliary unit of the Police Department. As such they have always conducted fund raising activities to obtain the funding they need for their equipment. This resolution formally accepts a new "command post" truck as a donated vehicle to the City, specifically to the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit. RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached Resolution to acceptance of a new "command post" truck purchased by the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit. STAFF ANALYSIS: For over fifty years the members of the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit have been providing auxiliary services to the police department and the community. These services include search and rescues activities in the mountains and desert surrounding the city. They also provide services in the area of urban rescues and searches. They have provided additional police personnel during special events such as Spring Break, the White Party, and Bike Weekend. All of the members of the unit are Level II or Level III Reserve Police Officers or Search and Rescue volunteers. During the last 30 years the members of this Unit have conducted fund raising activities to purchase specially equipped vehicles and other equipment to properly perform their duties. The Unit just purchased a new 2004 Ford E-450 truck to be used as a "command post" vehicle for $85,000. The current command post is a 1983 Ford that has mechanical problems and space restrictions. The unit's personnel store all of their rescue equipment in the command vehicle. This enables the unit to have their necessary equipment at the location of a rescue or incident. The entire cost was paid for by the fund raising efforts of the members of the Unit. The new command center vehicle will replace the existing one. FISCAL IMPACT: By accepting this vehicle the City will continue to provide gasoline, maintenance and insurance, G of Police David H.
