SUBJECT: THE NAMING OF THE PALM SPRINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT FIRING
RANGE IN HONOR OF COMMANDER JAMES A. HEAZLETT

SUMMARY
The City Council will consider a resolution naming the Police Department firing range in
honor of Commander James A. Heazlett a 32-year veteran of the Palm Springs Police
Department.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Resolution No. A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Palm
Springs, California, naming the Police Department's firing range the "James A. Heazlett
Firing Range" in honor of Commander Heazlett.
STAFF ANALYSIS:
Commander Heazlett dedicated his life to the citizens of Palm Springs and the Palm
Springs Police Department for 32 years. He was an integral member of our community
raising his family, teaching and volunteering his time in Palm Springs.
Commander James Heazlett was instrumental in the fundraising efforts to provide the
Police Department with a state-of-the-art technological firearms range. He was the
department's Range master/Firearms instructor for 15 years. Commander Heazlett also
created and taught the Citizens Firearms and Safety class, graduating over 200
citizens. One of these students also requested that the firearms range be named in
honor of Commander Heazlett.
Commander Heazlett passed away suddenly less then 3 years after his retirement on
January 26, 2005

Naming of Firing Range
FISCAL IMPACT:
No net fiscal impact.
Total cost estimated at approximately $500.00, to create and mount signage on firing
range. Costs to be paid for by the Palm Springs Police Officers Association.

OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM
SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, IN MEMORY OF JAMES A.
HEAZLETT, TO NAME THE PALM SPRINGS POLICE
DEPARTMENT FIRING RANGE, THE "JAMES A.
HEAZLETT FIRING RANGE"
WHEREAS, Commander James Heazlett dedicated his life to the citizens of Palm
Springs and the Palm Springs Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Commander James Heazlett was instrumental in the fundraising efforts to
provide the Police Department with a state-of-the-art technological firearms range; and
WHEREAS, Commander James Heazlett created and taught the Citizens Firearms and
Safety class graduating over 200 citizens; and
WHEREAS, Commander James Heazlett was an integral member of our community,

WHEREAS, Commander James Heazlett passed away suddenly less then 3 years after

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs,
California, as follows:
1. The City Council extends to the members of James Heazlett's family this
expression of sincere regret for his loss and the hope that they will be consoled
by the memories of his fine life and achievements.
2. That a proper copy of this Resolution, endorsed by each member of the City
Council and certified by the City Clerk, be respectfully transmitted to his
bereaved family.
3. That in memory of his lasting contributions to our community, the Palm Springs
Police Department firing range be named the "James A. Heazlett Firing Range".
