Ready, City Manager BY: Fleet Operations SUMMARY The current backhoe being used by the Public Works department to clear roads of drifting sand and other debris is old and due for replacement. This action would award the purchase of a new backhoe/loader for use by the Public Works Department. RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Minute Order No. , approving the purchase of one Model 420D-02 Caterpillar Backhoe from Johnson Machinery in the amount of$85,525.49 STAFF ANALYSIS: The City's Fleet is examined annually in conjunction with the budget process evaluate and determine which units should be replaced. The unit recommended for replacement has been in service for 14 years and exceeds all established criteria for replacement. In addition, this unit is a primary response unit to the drifting sand conditions that have developed as a result of the heavy rains this past winter. In keeping with the City's established commitment to improving air quality in the Coachella Valley, all fleet replacements are evaluated for their operational suitability to the use of alternative fuels. This equipment is not operationally suited or available in an alternative fuel configuration. The Procurement and Contracting Manager, pursuant to the requirements of Section 3.12.270.6 of the Municipal Code, finds that utilization of the Johnson Machinery CMAS (California Multiple Award Schedule) Contract #4-02-38-0014A to procure the proposed equipment at a 24.24% discount is adequate to protect the public interest, and the total cost of the equipment is likely to be less than could be obtained through and independent City competitive process.
