HomeMy WebLinkAbout4/6/2011 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 DATE: April 6, 2011. TOPIC: Parking, Trailhead Signage and Tourist Trails Map for Palm Springs TO: Palm Springs City Council FROM: Charles Nisbet Over the past ten years I have pointed out that Palm Springs is the Trails Capital of the Coachella Valley 18 of the 30, or 60%, of the public/free hiking opportunities in the Coachella Valley are located in Palm Springs 96 miles out of 195, or 50%, of the total trail miles of the public/free hikes in the Coachella Valley are located in Palm Springs The City of Palm Springs needs to maintain and solidify this unique asset as a significant amenity for its residents and visitors by installing eight trail head kiosks, providing designated trail head parking and making available a tourist trails map. The City of Palm Springs will then position itself to better capitalize on having the valley's best hiking opportunities for tourists coming to the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs Tourist Bureau, Palm Springs Parks and Recreation, Palm Springs Department of Public Works and the Desert Trails Coalition have been working cooperatively for more than three years to improve our hiking/recreational opportunities and better inform the public of their existence. The City of Palm Springs Trail Head Kiosks designs are finalized and ready for fabrication. A tourist trails map for the City of Palm Springs is available to be printed. Trail head parking areas have been identified for each trail head. Trail head parking signage has been developed. With the money already set aside to complete this project, a push should be made in the balance of 2011 to see that all is finished and in place by the end of the year. 5-0/0 f i f. 1Oo
