HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/16/2005 - STAFF REPORTS (17) F FALMS A 1' cq< CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT DATE: November 16, 2005 CONSENT CALENDAR SUBJECT: ACCEPT THE GRACIOUS DONATION FROM THE BERNS-SOLOMON FAMILY FOUNDATION FIDELITY CHARITABLE GIFT FUND AND THE ANDERSON CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY FROM: David H. Ready, City Manager BY: Police Department SUMMARY The City Council will consider a resolution accepting a donation of $10,000 to the Police Department for the Youth Police Academy. The donation includes $7,500 from the Anderson Children's Foundation, Bill Schlessinger, Trustee, and $2,500 from the Berns- Solomon Family Foundation Charitable Gift Fund, Steve and Abby Solomon, Trustees. RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Resolution No. , "A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING WITH GRATITUDE THE DONATION FROM THE ANDERSON CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION AND THE BERNS-SOLOMON FAMILY FOUNDATION CHARITABLE GIFT FUND TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT'S YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY." STAFF ANALYSIS: The Police Department's Police Activities League (PAL), in cooperation with the Palm ;iprings Unified School District, now offers a Youth Police Academy, which has a similar curriculum to our current Citizens Police Academy. The Youth Police Academy is coordinated by our PAL Officer and is offered after school to students in grades seven through twelve. Bill Schlessinger, Trustee of the Anderson Children's Foundation, and Steve and Abby Solomon, Trustees of The Berns-Solomon Family Foundation Charitable Gift Fund have donated a total of $10,000 to begin this program, which is now underway. WHEREAS the Anderson Children's Foundation, Bill Schlessinger, Trustee, has donated $7,500 to the begin a Youth Police Academy through the Palm Springs Police Department; and WHEREAS the Berns-Solomon Family Foundation Charitable Gift Fund, Steve and Abby Solomon, Trustees, has donated $2,500 to begin the Youth Police Academy through the Palm Springs Police Department; and WHEREAS the Police Department's Police Activities League (PAL), in cooperation with the Palm Springs Unified School District, now offers a Youth Police Academy to youth in grades seven through twelve; and WHEREAS the Youth Police Academy is built on a similar format and curriculum as the Police Department's Citizens' Police Academy. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, that the City Council accepts the donation with gratitude and authorizes the City Manager to accept this donation for use by the Police Department for the Youth Police Academy.
