Ready, City Manager BY: Police Department SUMMARY The City Council will consider a resolution accepting a donation of$17,800 to the Police Department for the purchase of two police canines. The donation includes $7,000 from the Cielo Vista Elementary School from their "Walk for Dogs" event, and $10,800 from Palm Springs residents Frank and Dana Boyd. RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Resolution No. , "A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING WITH GRATITUDE THE DONATION FROM THE CIELO VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND PALM SPRINGS RESIDENTS FRANK AND DANA BOYD FOR THE PURCHASE OF TWO POLICE DEPARTMENT CANINES." STAFF ANALYSIS: The Police Department's Police K-9 Unit is in need of two canines to bring the K-9 Unit up to full staffing. The canines are generally purchased through donations from citizens. Recently the Cielo Vista Elementary School staff and students held a "Walk for the Dogs" event in which people pledged money based on either how far a student walked or donated a certain amount to the student for his / her efforts, the proceeds of their effort to go to the Palm Springs Police Department for the purchase of a new canine. The Cielo Vista Elementary School staff and students raised $7,000 for the purchase of a police canine whose name will be %Mos", a name selected by a vote of Item No. 2. K . Upon hearing of our need, Frank and Dana Boyd, private citizens of Palm Springs, donated $10,800 to purchase another canine, the name for which Mr. and Mrs. Boyd will select at a later date. WHEREAS the Cielo Vista Elementary School, through their "Walk For the Dogs" event, has donated $7,000 to the Police Department K-9 Fund for the purchase of a Police Canine; and WHEREAS Palm Springs residents Frank and Dana Boyd have donated $10,800 to Police Department K-9 Fund for the purchase of a Police Canine; and WHEREAS the police canine allows police officers added safety and is a force multiplier, which enables officers to be more time efficient; and WHEREAS the Police Department's Police K-9 Unit is currently operating with only two canines in Patrol as opposed to the optimum four canines. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Palm Springs, that the City Council accepts the donation with gratitude and authorizes the City Manager to accept this donation for use by the Police Department K-9 Fund for the purchase of two Police Canines.
