SUMMARY

Chairman Richard M. Milanovich Memorial Bridge."
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Resolution No. , "A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, NAMING THE BELARDO BRIDGE, "THE
CHAIRMAN RICHARD M. MILANOVICH MEMORIAL BRIDGE."
BACKGROUND & ANALYSIS:
On March 11, 2012, one of our City's most respected and beloved community leaders,
Agua Caliente Tribal Chairman Richard M. Milanovich passed away.
Milanovich, who was 69, hailed from a notable Agua Caliente family. During the 1950's,
his mother LaVerne Saubel, was elected Vice Chairwoman of the first all woman Tribal
Council in America. For nearly 30 years, Chairman Milanovich led the Tribe as it grew
to become an important business and cultural leader in Palm Springs, the Coachella
Valley, and the nation. He was known as much for his visionary leadership and keen
business sense as he was for his big heart, love for the Agua Caliente culture, and the
citizens of Palm Springs.
Under Milanovich's tenure, the Tribe developed the successful Spa Resort Casino in
downtown Palm Springs along with the Agua Caliente Resort and Spa in Rancho
Mirage. Chairman Milanovich and the Tribal Council were

strong supporters of the Palm Springs police and fire departments and generously
donated to a host of other charitable organizations.
Recently, the Tribe, in partnership with the City of Palm Springs, broke ground on the
much anticipated Belardo Bridge project in South Palm Springs. This important project
connects the heart of downtown to the Tribe's Tahquitz Canyon Trails. Yet it also
represents a deeper link, it highlights the successful partnership between the Agua
Caliente and the City of Palm Springs, who over the years have worked hand in hand to
secure more than $3 million in Public Lands Highway funding ensuring that the Belardo
Bridge becomes reality.
This project, in the works for 20 years, was close to Chairman Milanovich's heart — and
it fact, the October 2011 groundbreaking was one of the last event's at which he
appeared publically. The Chairman was excited to see the hard work conducted by
Tribal and City staff finally come to fruition; therefore, the City would be honored for the
Belardo Road Bridge to be named after this much loved community leader who played
such a tremendous role in making it happen.
