CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT
DATE: May 3, 2006 Consent Calendar
I UBJECT: VILLAGEFEST ADVERTISING
FROM: David H. Ready, City Manager
BY: Department of Parks and Recreation
SUMMARY
The City Council approve an advertising contract with KESQ-TV for a summer
advertising program for VillageFest to run in June, July, August and September.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Adopt Minute Order No. authorizing the City Manager to purchase
promotional advertising from KESQ-TV on behalf of VillageFest for the months of
June, July, August and September for a total amount not to exceed $18,550.
STAFF ANALYSIS:
VillageFest began advertising on local television slightly over one year ago in an
attempt to increase attendance at the weekly street fair. All indications from vendors
and staff over the past year suggest that this has been a highly successful venture.
The program was expanded last fall to include a minimal amount of pre-holiday
advertising and then again earlier this spring. Again, the program has proven to be
highly successful.
As a result, staff is seeking City Council's approval to continue this program through the
upcoming summer months with an advertising program developed by KESQ-TV. The
advertising targets certain demographic segments that are believed to be appropriate
for VillageFest attendees. Advertising spots will run at various times on KESQ, KDFX
and KCWB television throughout the day and week, replicating the highly successful
program developed in the summer of 2005.
The cost of the summer advertising program totals $18,550. The amount includes
$5,300 for the month of June, $6,625 for July, $5,300 for August, and $1,325 for the first
part of September. Because of previous advertising expenditures throughout the year,
Item No. Z.O .
the aggregate expenditure for VillageFest will exceed the $25,000 purchasing authority
of the City Manager and, thus, requires City Council approval.
