HomeMy WebLinkAbout23169 RESOLUTION NO. 23169 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF THE CREATION OF PROGRAMS AND REGULATIONS TO STOP ILLEGAL FORECLOSURES AND WRONGFUL EVICTIONS. WHEREAS, some Palm Springs and Coachella Valley residents, like citizens across the United States, are facing difficult challenges from the continuing economic difficulties that threatens fiscal stability and quality of life; and WHEREAS, the fiscal impact of the continuing economic slowdown is harmful to education, public services, infrastructure and essential services such as: school class sizes growing, reductions in public safety provisions, delaying to maintain essential infrastructure and reductions in services to libraries, recreation and park facilities; and WHEREAS, one of the problems contributing to the economic stagnation is illegal foreclosure practices; and WHEREAS, California and the Coachella Valley has been particularly hard-hit by the foreclosures; and WHEREAS, the costs of foreclosures to the California taxpayers includes: loss of property tax revenue and the loss of revenue to local, county and school districts, along with the direct costs of blighted properties, evictions, inspections, public safety trash and graffiti removal. NOW THEREFORE THE CITY COUNCIL DETERMINES AND RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. In view of the unresolved issues surrounding foreclosure practices the City Council hereby supports the creation of programs and regulations to stop illegal foreclosures and wrongful evictions.
