SUBJECT: PALM SPRINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES ANNUAL
REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2011-2012

SUMMARY
The City Council will receive the Fiscal Year 2011-12 Library Board of Trustees Annual
Report, pursuant to Article VII, Section VIII of the Bylaws of the Board of Library
Trustees.
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive and file the Palm Springs Library Board of Trustees Annual Report for Fiscal
Year 2011-12 .
STAFF ANALYSIS:
Pursuant to Article VII, Section VIII of the Bylaws of the Board of Library Trustees, the
Board must report to the City Council and to the California State Librarian on the
condition of the library, for the year ending the 30th day of June preceding. The reports
shall, in addition to other matters deemed expedient by the Board or Director of Library
Services, contain such statistical and other information as is deemed desirable by either
the City Council and/or the California State Librarian.
Staff has worked closely with the Board of Library Trustees to gather accurate and
relevant data in order to provide an overarching snapshot of library activities throughout
the year. Highlights of the Annual Report will show that over 225,000 people visited the
Palm Springs Public Library in the past fiscal year, over 6,000 users obtained new
library cards, and there were over 57,000 public computer sessions.
The Palm Springs Library is proud to present this information to Council. The City of
Palm Springs has a wonderful history of valuing library services. As far back as 1919,
well before incorporation, the residents established a public library in a small adobe

building. As the City grew, the citizens followed the library through more than 12
different locations. With over 100,000 individual items, the Palm Springs Public Library
offers a varied and comprehensive collection to the community.

Library Card The Most Valuable Card In Your Wallet!
The Palm Springs Library Card gives holders access to materials and services the Library has
to offer.As of June 30, 2012 there were 18,264 active Library card holders, with over 6,000
of those signing up for a Library card during the fiscal year. While many are snow birds and
short-term visitors, most are full-time residents of Palm Springs and the surrounding cities of
Desert Hot Springs,Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and others.
A Library Card allows for up to one-hour per day of FREE computer usage in the Library as well as checking-out
books, DVDs, CDs and more. From home, a Library Card allows access to a variety of database resources that the
Library provides on our web site.These include: HeritageQuest for Genealogy research, HelpNow providing access
to live tutors to assist with homework and test prep,JobNow that helpsjob seekers with their resume and inter-
viewing skills and Mango that teaches foreign languages as well as assisting English-as-a-Second-Language
learners. There are also resources for magazine and newspaper articles, an encyclopedia and other research tools.
Public Events & Classes
Lectures, classes,and story times are just a few of the many types of programming the
Library creates and presents to the Public of all ages throughout the year.
Based on public input and comments,trends,and initiatives,the library staff presents
programs that educate, inform and support the life-long learning process for all.
NEW:A partnership with Eisenhower Medical Center was introduced to present a
once-a-month lecture series called Healthier Living From Head To Toe at the Library.
The PC Beyond Basic Computer Instruction classes were expanded and continue to be Swazzle puppets per-

The use of e-readers,smart phones and tablets has increased the demand for access to
download eBooks to check-out from the Library. In addition to the downloadable audiobooks the
