ACCEPTANCE OF DONATED TRUCK FROM MOUNTED POLICE SEARCH AND
RESCUE UNIT INTO THE CITY OF PALM SPRINGS FLEET
SUMMARY
The Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit is an auxiliary unit of the
Police Department. As such they have always conducted fund raising activities to obtain
the funding they need for their equipment. This resolution formally accepts a vehicle as
donated to the City, specifically to the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue
Unit.
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Resolution No. , "A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, ACCEPTING THE GRACIOUS DONATION OF A
VEHICLE FROM THE MOUNTED POLICE SEARCH AND RESCUE UNIT" valued at
$26,917.25.
STAFF ANALYSIS:
For over fifty years the members of the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and
Rescue Unit have been volunteering auxiliary services to the police department and the
community. These services include search and rescues activities in the mountains and
desert surrounding the city. They also provide services in the area of urban rescues and
searches. They have provided additional police personnel during special events such as
Spring Break, the White Party, and Bike Weekend. All of the members of the unit are
Level II or Level III Reserve Police Officers or Search and Rescue volunteers.

Purchase Cyrun CAD and RIMS
Historically, the Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit (SAR) has maintained their
own fleet of vehicles, however it was determined on January 19, 2005 by Council
Resolution that the vehicles they owned would be transferred to the City and would
become part of the City fleet. The City would then be responsible for maintenance and
upkeep of the vehicles, and the Fleet Manager would be able to keep an accurate
inventory control.
To date the SAR has donated 8 vehicles to the fleet. This truck will replace a truck they
are currently using, and the replaced truck will be assigned to the Special Response
Team. This will eliminate the need for the Police Department to purchase a new truck
for the team.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The City will be receiving a $25,000 truck for free, however there will be ongoing
operations and maintenance costs associated with the vehicle. All of the SAR vehicles
get very limited use, and thus the recurring costs will not be significant. The Shop
estimates the annual cost to be $1000 - $2000 annually.
