keep pace with the Department's continually expanding data storage requirements.
The Police Department's data storage requirements are rapidly expanding, and it has
been difficult to maintain storage space at the necessary level. Storage Area Networks
are a fault tolerant dedicated network that provides access to consolidated, block level
data storage. They are primarily used to enhance storage devices, such as disk arrays,
tape libraries, and optical players. SANS are accessible to servers so that the devices
appear as locally attached devices to the operating system. A SAN typically has its own
network of storage devices that are generally not accessible through the local area

2000s to levels allowing wider adoption across enterprise, small to medium sized
business environments, and government entities.
Increased storage space is necessary to save important data generated by the
numerous new law enforcement technologies the Police Department has implemented
in the past several years. Portions of the storage space will be configured as logical
units and assigned to different servers. The Department has been planning to purchase
an enhanced storage solution for some time, but has not had the required funding until
the JAG Grant was awarded. The Police Department will use the storage space to add
storage to a server that is running out of space, to setup new virtual servers as needed,
to store backup files, etc. Manager of Information Technology James R. Smith has
reviewed and approved of this acquisition.
The implementation of a Storage Area Network will allow for improved crime prevention,
and assist in law enforcement efforts in the field.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no impact on the General Fund and there are no matching funds required.
