J " ous^• cq4 1FOR %V1 City Council Staff Report DATE: DECEMBER 17, 2014 CONSENT CALENDAR SUBJECT: APPROVING THE CONVERSION OF ONE TENNIS COURT TO FOUR PICKLEBALL COURTS AT DEMUTH PARK. FROM: David H. Ready, City Manager BY: Parks and Recreation SUMMARY The City Council will consider approving the conversion of one (1) tennis court at Demuth Park into four (4) pickleball courts. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the conversion of one tennis court to four pickelball courts at Demuth Park, insofar as the total cost does not exceed $15,000. STAFF ANALYSIS: Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, especially in the senior arena. Pickleball is a fast paced game that combines elements of ping pong, badminton and tennis. It is played on smaller courts using paddles. Each game has four players. One tennis court can be converted into four (4) pickleball courts, accommodating 16 players at a time. In February the Parks and Recreation Department was approached by members of the community about converting one of the tennis courts at Demuth Park into four (4) pickleball courts. The discussion of pickleball courts has appeared on the Parks and Recreation Commission agenda on several occasions. City Staff contacted other cities in the Coachella Valley inquiring about whether they had experienced similar requests. The City of Palm Desert converted one of their courts into four pickleball courts and is looking to convert others in the city. The City of Cathedral City converted one of their courts as well. ITEM NO._�L City Council Staff Report December 17, 2014— Page 2 Pickleball Courts at Demuth Park A Subcommittee of the Parks and Recreation Commission and City Staff met with users of the tennis courts and residents of Demuth Park on November 18, 2014, to solicit input for the potential conversion. Two meetings were held, one in the morning and one in the evening hours. A total of twenty (20) people attended the two meetings and no one was opposed to the idea of converting one of the courts into pickleball. The Parks and Recreation Commission at their November 18, 2014, meeting voted unanimously to recommend the City Council approve the conversion of one tennis court into four pickleball courts at Demuth Park in an amount not to exceed $15,000. FISCAL IMPACT: The estimated cost for the conversion is approximately $15,000. Sufficient funds are available in Fund 261-2494 Parks and Recreation Capital Projects. I am hoping that you all will be supportive of this in our city. You have all known me for a number of years and no I wouldn't be passionate I didn't feel was to the benefit of our community. City Council Members, Thank you very much for having pickleball on this weeks agenda. I would like to have your support to approve 2P converting 1 tennis court to 4 Pickleball courts at Demuth Park. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport for participation in the USA. I have been working on this for over a year now and really appreciate all your efforts to get this approved.
