A.Oi Y A LM S'O4 iy V N A City Council Staff Report •CQ<1FONP NEW BUSINESS DATE: February 18, 2015 SUBJECT: APPROVE THE INSTALLATION OF THE SCULPTURE "R. HERO,, BY KAREN AND TONY BARONE AT AN ALTERNATE SITE FROM: David H. Ready, Esq., Ph.D., City Manager BY: Community & Economic Development SUMMARY This action is to approve a location of the donated sculpture, "R. HERO" by artists Karen and Tony Barone. They have requested placement at the Palm Springs Library in Sunrise Park. RECOMMENDATION: 1. Approve a site recommendation to install the donated sculpture "R. HERO' 2. Authorize City Manager to execute all necessary documents. STAFF ANALYSIS: Previously, City Council had approved acceptance of the art sculpture "R. HERO," by Karen and Tony Barone. The artwork, a dog figure fabricated from solid aluminum with a clear-coat finish, painted red with signature black Dalmatian spots, is 6-2" in size. Originally, the artwork was intended to be placed at Fire Station #4; on La Verne Drive (a previously donated companion R. HERO sculpture is currently located at Fire Station #3, on Racquet Club Drive). However, at a subsequent Arts Commission Meeting, the artists and donors were present and expressed a desire for consideration of an alternate location with higher pedestrian traffic. Working with the Arts Commission Sub- Committee, several alternate sites were suggested, as follows: 1. The Palm Springs Public Library, 300 S. Sunrise Way 2. The Palm Springs Dog Park, at the southwest corner, visible from Civic Drive; 3. The Palm Springs Police Training Center, 150 S. Civic Drive (includes the canine training field); 4. The Palm Springs Fire Training Center, 3000 E. Alejo Road ITEM NO._ City Council Staff Report February 18, 2015 -- Page 2 Approve Recommended Installation Site for R. HERO The Commission voted to recommend each of these sites as appropriate for Council consideration. Of these alternate locations, the artist's strong preference is the library site. Their rationale includes the fact that high levels of pedestrian traffic, especially children, use the library and park on a daily basis. FISCAL IMPACT: The estimated cost to install the sculpture is approximately $8,000 which includes site preparation, artwork delivery and installation. These costs will be paid from Public Arts Fund Account #150-30-4408-50015. Jennifer H n ing J n Ra on rector Arts & Sp cial Projects dinator qomm ity & nomic Development David H. Ready, E .
