CITY COUNCIL REQUESTED REVIEW OF THE AMERICAN HEAT PALM SPRINGS MOTORCYCLE WEEKEND 2015, AND CONSIDERATION OF THE ANNUAL EVENT PROMOTIONAL SPONSORSHIP IN THE AMOUNT OF $26,250: RECOMMENDATION: Direct Staff as appropriate. MATERIALS TO FOLLOW Item No. 5eA * a 400 R E S 0 R T S TI&NIL Pa& July 1, 2015 To the Mayor, Members of the City Council, David Ready, Chief Al Franz&City Staff: Akab Dada Earlier this week the board of directors of PS Resorts met with Chief AI Franz regarding CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD American Heat Bike weekend scheduled to be a sanctioned event in October of this year. This event has been hosted by our city and Tourism community for the last sixteen Tim Ellis years. For an event this size we have had very few incidents of concern. VICE CHAIRMAN The promoter, Roadshows has been tremendous to work with and starting back such a Robert Hunt long time ago built up a weekend in October that was weak, into the strongest rated SECRETARY weekend of the Month for the Hotels. We respect and thank the dedication and longtime support of our customer Roadshows. Stan Kantowski TREASURER After carefully listening to the Chief of Police about the potential growing threat of violence between rival gangs, it was necessary for PS Resorts to debate the historical merits of this event against the potential of people being injured due to violence that might potentially follow this event. According to the Chief the incident in Waco, TX has heightened the concerns surrounding this event. PS Resorts after a great amount of debate has chosen to support the Chief of Police and not sponsor the event for 2015. Just like we took a pause in 2002 with this event because of the incident that took place in Laughlin, NV Randy Burke, promoter of Road Shows has agreed to bring this event back in 2016 and beyond baring any other unforeseen incidents in 2016. With support from City Hall, the Police Department and Tourism industry, we will reconsider this event for 2016 and beyond with your support. It with a great deal of the sadness that this event will not be held in 2015 and that the majority of atten ees that come to have fun with their friends will have lost a great weekend due to the behavior of a few. ft Tim Ellis h it an Co-Chairman ^ P Resorts Board of Directors 190 Amado Road • Palm Springs, CA 92262 • 760-275-0963 • www P'9-RESORTS.com D"-K MAYCKP©OGNCT tom. :. The Texas House on Friday approved the measure, which would funnel state fees to motorcycle safety campaigns. It now heads to Gov. Greg Abbott. Five men wearing leather jackets and vests watched the vote. They advocated for the bill in place of three bikers who helped write the legislation, but who are among about 170 people jailed following Sunday's melee. One of those watching from the House gallery, Ty Yocham, said he was delayed by an accident while heading to a meeting at the Waco restaurant where the police-involved shooting occurred. Yocham says he and other bikers running late turned around after hearing about the shooting, which killed nine people. Investigators say the shooting began during a confrontation between two rival motorcycle gangs, and then spilled into the parking lot. Police say officers returned fire after the bikers shot at them. http://www.kwtx.com/news/state/headlines/1'exas-Lawmakers-Approve-Motorcycle-Safety-... 6/3/2015 3 bikers arrested in Waco helped write motorcycle safety bill OK'd by Texas House I Dall... Kra Betts,KVUE 7.03 p.m.r'T)TAprd 11,2015 AUSTIN—Every year, hundreds of bikers join together to ride into Austin to enjoy the beauty of the city and, in the process, support the families of fallen police officers. Business owner, philanthropist and billionaire John Paul DeJoria created the Peace,Love, Happiness Charity Ride 13 years ago. Since the beginning, the charity has raised millions of dollars for the 100 Club of Central Texas,an organization that provides financial and emotional assistance to injured or killed first responders and their families. So far this year,DeJoria's organization has raised more than$150,000. DeJoria said he organizes the charity out of his respect for the"fireman, paramedic,or police officer"He said he also dedicates the ride to"all law enforcement and all first responders." At the same time,he said he gets a chance to take a joy ride. "It's like freedom, the open road. Its what America is all about,"he said. But this motorcycle group does not just put pavement under their tires. "We give(the families)a helping hand and we have a blast and that's how I chose to spend my birthday,"DeJoria said."I've done It for 13 years and it feels really, really good" http://www.kvue.com/story/news/2015/04/11/charity-bike-ride-brings-peace-love-happiness-to-police-off... 6/2/2015 Charity bike ride brings 'peace, love happiness'to police officers Page 2 of 4 The Peace Love Happiness Charity kicked off the weekend with a concert at ACL Live Friday night featuring Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys.
