Subject: Request for Street name
Date: Mon, Jul 20, 2015 3:19 pm
Mayor Pougnet
On July 71 submitted a letter to the City Council requesting that a street in the City of Palm Springs be named to
honor long time resident (1966), Mr. Trini Lopez.
At last week's City Council Meeting a follow up to my letter was made by presentation by several Palm Springs
citizens who spoke in favor of my proposal.
Unfortunately, I did not include my recommendation as to street. We believe the logical location would be the new
street from Palm Canyon Drive to the Museum. Because it is anew street cost to merchants and to the City would
be minimal.
Please advise when I can expect communication from the appropriate official at the City.
Please consider this e-mail an addendum to my letter request of July 7, 2015.
Respectfully,
Tony C. Aguilar, Jr.

Dear Mayor, Pougnet
It is with pleasure that I make the request that the City of Palm Springs honor one of
its own by naming a street after International recording singer and actor, Mr. Trini
Lopez.
Mr. Lopez purchased his home in the Las Palmas area in 1966 after he attained Star
status from his early recordings and co -staring in the mega hit movie "The Dirty
Dozen" ( released in 1967). Trini has been active in the Palm Springs community
raising thousands of dollars for charities in the Coachella Valley. In particular, Trini
has donated his time and talent to Palm Springs Youth Charities (aka Greater Palm
Springs Celebrity Golf Classic) numerous times helping to raise thousands of dollars
for charities that Palm Springs Youth Charities has supported. AmFar (American
Foundation for Aids Research, Angel View and Palm Springs High School graduates
selected to receive four thousand dollar scholarships for continued education at an
accredited college.
I am attaching as enclosure (1) Trini's professional resume which we feel compels
and supports approval of this request. Naming a street after Mr. Trini Lopez
would honor him as the first Latino Celebrity full time resident of Palm Springs his
home since 1966.

Trini Lopez He'll always belong to Palm Springs
By Marilyn Mitchell
For Desert Entertainer
TRINI LOPEZ: Star #8, Dedicated May
21, 1993, 123 North Palm Canyon Drive
Long time Palm Springs resident Trial
Lopez got his start on the street corners
of his home town of Dallas, Texas,
playing a $12 guitar his father managed
to buy for him.
Bern Into a musical but poor family,
Trial helped out by singing In clubs
throughout the Southwest. At age 18,
he was offered a three-year recording
contract and somewhere along the way
met and befriended Buddy Holly and his
band "The Crickets."
But fate stepped in when Holly's career
was cut short by his death in a plane
crash. The band, finding themselves
without a leader, asked Trini to join
them in Hollywood as their lead singer.
A devastated Trini arrived in Hollywood
only to learn that the boys in the band
weren't ready to go back to a life out on
the road and a determined Trini found a
solo gig in Beverly Hills' "Ye LIMB Club
which led to an even better gig at
"P.J.'s," where he performed to a
packed house for 18 months.
Frank Sinatra's record producer caught Trinl's act, was impressed and brought him to Frank's
attention, and Trini was signed to Frank Sinatra's Reprise label. His first album for Reprise
was "Trini Lopez Live at P.J.'s,' which to this day is his biggest selling album.
Trini has since recorded 63 albums, Including his latest, "Ramblln Men,' Sold over one
hundred million albums world-wide, won many honors and awards, gold records, and
performed in TV and movies. Trini recently completed a featured role in an Independent film
shot right here In the desert called "Palm Springs High School," In which he performs one of
his biggest hits "La Bamba."
lust last November, Trfnl starred in a PBS special, "Trini Lopez Presents Latin Music
Legends," taped at the Orpheum Theatre in L.A. It was produced by Bob Alexander,
President of the P.S. Walk of Stars, and was written by my late husband, Gordon "Whitey"
Mitchell. It's scheduled to air this June. Trini will appear at the Hilton Hotel and Casino in
Atlantic City Sept. 13 - 18, as part of a U.S. tour. But Trini will always belong to Palm Springs
where he plays golf and tennis and brightens the social and charity scene with his Immense
talents.
The Palm Springs Walk of Stars was founded in 1992 and honors individuals with a Golden
Palm Star on the sidewalks of downtown Palm Springs. If you d like to nominate someone for

Trini Lopez - he is foreverM
Trini was a poor boy from the barrio of Dallas, Texas. He remembers they had barely enough
food for the family, the amount was always determined by his parent's ability to get whatever
work they could. They worked and struggled together just to survive. They plowed fields
together and his mother washed clothes in the neighborhood for extra income. You can't
imagine how hard it was for the family.
Trini has made lemonade from a life that began with nothing
but lemons! When he was eleven years old, his father
spanked him for hanging around with the wrong kind of
kids. What a wise man he was to lead his talented son from
a life of street gangs to a life of sophisticated
graciousness. Trinidad Lopez Sr., felt so badly about the
spanking he had given his son, he bought him a $12.00 guitar
he really couldn't afford. Trini says "A spanking literally
changed my life."
Trini learned to play the guitar from his father, and then he
played for money on the street corners. He eventually went
on to form his own group. It was then that the world saw the
beginnings of the singing, acting, and very talented Trini
Lopez. Trim's first songs were Mexican sing -along.
When Trini was 18 years old, King Records in Cincinnati, Ohio, heard that he had written and
recorded a single in Dallas on a little label called Volk Records. The name of the song was "The
Right to Rock". From the beginning, the record producer wanted Trini to change his name to
anything but Lopez. Trini was and is proud of his heritage and was devasted by the
situation. Trini refused and was heading out the door when the record producer by the
situation. Trini refused and was heading out the door when the record producer stopped him and
said "Okay, Okay, you can keep your name." The single made a little noise in Dallas, enough
noise for King Records to be impressed with Trim's voice and style. King Records offered him a
three year recording contract. They flew Trini from Dallas to Cincinnati to record for two weeks
at a time. Unfortunately, the only songs they were giving Trini to record were old country songs
they had in their catalog by country artists such as Cowboy Copus. Once in a while on some
recording sessions, Trini would slip in some of his own compositions that were more up to
date. The only song to hit the charts nationally on the King label for Trini was a song he covered
by the Skyliners called "Since I Don't Have You.". The song hit the Top 10 nationwide, and
Trini was elated to see his name in Cashbox and Billboard. The only other song on King
Records Trini had that was a No. 1 hit in his hometown of Dallas was a song called "Don't Let
Your Sweet Love Die".
Trini befriended the famous recording artist Buddy Holly, a fellow Texan. Buddy asked if he
would like to meet his record producer in Clovis, New Mexico. Trini was elated and packed his
station wagon with his group and drove to Clovis with the
hopes of recording. Buddy Hol record producer tamed
his
out to be prejudiced because of his heritage. He would not
allow the use of Trim's real name on the record label. Trini's
group agreed with the conspiracy against Trini's Latin name
and they agreed not to allow Trini to sing on the record. The
record was released as an instrumental under the name "The
Big Beats". When Trini returned to Dallas, he disbanded the
group and assembled a new band.
While in Clovis, Trini befriended not only Buddy Holly but
{ also his band, The Crickets. As fate would have it, two
months later, Buddy Holly was killed in a fatal plane crash
along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. A couple of
months after the plane crash, Trini received a phone call from
The Crickets asking him to come to Hollywood to be their
lead singer. Trini was ecstatic, and instead of flying he used the money sent by The Crickets to
drive his station wagon to Los Angeles. All through the two and half day trip, Trini kept saying
to himself Hollywood or bust, Hollywood or bust!! ! Trini arrived in H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D.
The agreement Trini had with The Crickets did not materialize because The Crickets were
enjoying their royalties and record sales from Buddy Holly's past hit recordings and were in no
hung to perform.
The $200 Trini left Dallas with was gone. He had promised he would be sending money to his
parents from his engagements in California. Out of desperation, Trini Lopez, the star was born.
Trini got a job at the Ye Little Club in Beverly Hills. He was hired with no group, just Trini and
his guitar. His engagement was to last only two weeks and ended up lasting a year.
The first big break came at the popular night spot called
PJ's in Hollywood. Here he was spotted by the world
famous record producer, the late Don Costa, who then
brought Trini to the attention of his longtime idol, the
Great Frank Sinatra. Mr. Sinatra a fellow stylist
immediately asked Don Costa to signed Trini to an
exclusive eight year contract on Sinatra's Reprise
Records.
Reprise released his first album "Trini Lopez at PJ's"
which became a No. 1 hit worldwide. Out of that album,
a single "If I I -lad a Hammer" became a No. 1 hit in thirty
eight countries.
