Ready, City Manager BY: Parks and Recreation SUMMARY The City Council will consider approving the conversion of one (1) additional tennis court at Demuth Park into four (4) pickleball courts. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the conversion of one additional tennis court to four pickleball courts at Demuth Park insofar as the total cost does not exceed $10,160. STAFF ANALYSIS: Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, especially in the senior arena. Pickleball is a fast paced game that combines elements of ping pong, badminton and tennis. It is played on smaller courts using paddles. Each game has four players. One tennis court can be converted into four (4) pickleball courts, accommodating 16 players at a time. At the December 17, 2014 the City Council approved the conversion of one tennis court at Demuth Park into four (4) pickleball courts. The court conversion was completed in April and open for pickleball. Since the opening of the courts people have been waiting to play on them. The Parks and Recreation Staff have noted the need for more pickleball courts is a reality and the demand will continue in height of "season". The residents who utilize the pickleball courts attended the June 16, 2015, Parks and Recreation Commission meeting asking the Commission to be proactive on additional courts. The Parks and Recreation Commission at their July 21, 2015, meeting voted unanimously to recommend the City Council approve another tennis court conversion to pickleball courts at Demuth Park. `` ; FEE M NO. )C(/ City Council Staff Report October 21, 2015 — Page 2 Installing Pickleball Courts at Demuth Park If approved Demuth Park will have 8 pickleball courts, and two remaining tennis courts, which Staff believes is sufficient for the current use of the tennis courts at Demuth.
