HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/16/2015 - STAFF REPORTS - 00 Board of Trustees Palm Springs Public Library System 300 South Sunrise Way, Palm Springs, CA 92264 Wednesday, December 16, 2015 To: Mayor Rob Moon, Councilmember Ginny Foat, Councilmember Chris Mills, Councilmember Geoff Kors, and Councilmember JR Roberts From: David L. Gray, President Pro Tern Board of Trustees of the Palm Springs Public Library Good Evening. My name is David Gray, and as President Pro Tem of the Board of Trustees of the Palm Springs Public Library I want to congratulate you Mr. Moon on your recent election as Mayor, and to Councilmembers Kors and Roberts on your election to City Council as well. We look forward to working with you, along with Councilmembers Foat and Mills. As you know the past City Council has worked hard with us to improve library service here in Palm Springs. We reopened the historic downtown Welwood Murray Memorial Library, studied plans for a renovation of the main library located in Sunrise Park, while at the same time upgrading services and offering more hours. However there is still work to be done. We need to finish the ADA compliance at the Welwood, as well as the patio area in the rear of the building. We also need to seek direction on where we need to go to continue improving services at the main library. Next year, the Welwood will be celebrating its 751h anniversary and we are excited to be offering programs, as well as historic research facilities there to the thousands of citizens and visitors alike since its opening last February. In 2019 Palm Springs will also be celebrating the 1001h anniversary of library service in Palm Springs. We look forward to working with you, the Friends and the newly formed Foundation of the Palm Springs Public Library, to continue upgrading library services. As I notice on your agenda for this evening, you will be looking at reconvening various City Council liaisons and committees. We look forward to working with the new City Council Library Subcommittee so that we can continue to explore these issues together. Thank you. Kathie Hart From: Ginny Feat Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2015 2:57 PM To: Jay Thompson Subject: FW: Plaza Tennis Club-5 Point game plan Attachments: B&W.jpg From: Batiste Neighborhood [mai Ito:baristoneighborhoodCagmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2015 4:41 PM To: Chris Mills; Ginny Foat; JR Roberts; Geoff Kors Subject: Plaza Tennis Club - 5 Point game plan TO: Chris Mills, Mayor Pro Tem: Council members Kors, Foat& Roberts Please review my five-point plan which was submitted to the Mayor for review and consideration. The Plaza Racquet Club is important to the city and I am truly confident we can find a way to preserve the tennis club as well as pave the way for the new buyer to develop a quality project on this site within the Baristo Neighborhood's boundaries. This proposal, if adopted, is a win-win for all parties/stakeholders and the city can move forward in a positive collaborative way. I hope you agree. Feel free to call me anytime. David Carden,jr. Mr. Mayor—it was such a pleasure to talk to you yesterday about the Plaza Racquet Club located in the middle of the Baristo Neighborhood (BNO) This issue is very important to our neighborhood and our city and also affords an opportunity for a collaborative effort to save the tennis club and provide an avenue for the new property owner/developer to create a project which enhances the Baristo corridor and preserves a valuable asset to our city. This is what One PS is all about—neighborhoods helping to create a better city! Here is my 5 point plan fox the Plaza Tennis Club. Perhaps the potential threat of closing and tearing down the Plaza Racquet Club (PRC) presents a golden opportunity for all parties to think outside the box in finding a viable and successful win-win solution. The PRC owners, city leaders, school district and new owners/developer have an opportunity to find a way to preserve the culturally important tennis club as well as pave the way for a new development in the Baristo neighborhood. 1. Create a team of stakeholders to to work together to find common ground which benefits everyone. Your `Mayor's Committee: Plaza Tennis Club' should include the PRC owners, members of the club, BNO neighborhood leaders, school district, historical preservation representative, new property owner and city officials (staff). 2. Explore the possibility of a public/private partnership to create a new location for the tennis club. This could include the use of existing city property or purchasing a new location, etc. 3. New location option. could include Ruth Hardy Park or Demuth Park. Both of these city-owned parks have the room for expansion of existing tennis courts. A newly expanded tennis area with clubhouse would also segway into the City's efforts to convert grass areas to desertscape/tennis courts and reap additional water savings. 4. Work with historical preservation groups to see if the clubhouse can be saved and moved to another location. This Lalo Sandot-designed structure is worth saving and, by relocating it would create goodwill within the preservation community as well as saving an architecturally significant structure. If the clubhouse structure is saved/moved this could result in substantial savings and construction costs for a new tennis facility. `If it ain't broke don't fix it'rings true with the existing clubhouse. It is functional and can continue to serve the tennis club well without exorbitant costs. 5. Set a timeline of60 days for the `Mayor's Committee: Plaza Racquet Club' to submit a proposal to save the tennis club. This might tie in well with the extended escrow between the developer and school district. This issue is a golden opportunity for you to move our city forward by creating a collaborative effort between all parties with new ideas and creative solutions to a major cultural issue in Palm Springs. This is a win-win for all of us and signals a new day and a New Year for Palm Springs! It is also my hope the Pahm Springs Unified School District will be on board to work for a win-win solution. While I recognize there are property rights issues PSUSD must also realize they have an opportunity to be good neighbors too. David Carden, jr. -161,1482-&114* ON WOM f'. He remembers they had barely enough food for the family, the amount was always determined by his parent's ability to get whatever work they could They worked and struggled together just to survive. They plowed fields together and his mother washed clothes in the neighborhood for extra income. You can't imagine how hard it was for the family. Trini has made lemonade from a life that began with nothing but lemonsl When he was eleven years old,his father spanked him for hanging around with the wrong kind of kids. What a wise man he was to lead his talented son from ' a life of street gangs to a life of sophisticated graciousness. Trinidad Lopez Sr.,felt so badly about the spanking he had given his son, he bought him a $12.00 guitar he really couldn't afford. Trini says"A spanking literally changed my life." Trini learned to play the guitar from his father, and then he played for money on the street corners. He eventually went on to form his own group. It was then that the world saw the beginnings of the singing, acting, and very talented Trini Lopez. Trini's first songs were Mexican sing-along. When Trini was 18 years old,King Records in Cincinnati,Ohio, heard that he had written and recorded a single in Dallas on a little label called Volk Records. The name of the song was"The Right to Rock". From the beginning, the record producer wanted Trini to change his name to anything but Lopez. Trini was and is proud of his heritage and was devasted by the situation. Trini refused and was heading out the door when the record producer by the situation. Trini refused and was heading out the door when the record producer stopped him and said"Okay, Okay, you can keep your name." The single made a little noise in Dallas, enough noise for King Records to be impressed with Trini's voice and style. King Records offered him a three year recording contract. They flew Trini from Dallas to Cincinnati to record for two weeks at a time. Unfortunately, the only songs they were giving Trini to record were old country songs they had in their catalog by country artists such as Cowboy Copus. Once in a while on some recording sessions, Trini would slip in some of his own compositions that were more up to date. The only song to hit the charts nationally on the King label for Trini was a song he covered by the Skyliners called"Since I Don't Have You.". The song hit the Top 10 nationwide, and Trini was elated to see his name in Cashbox and Billboard The only other song on King Records Trini had that was a No. I hit in his hometown of Dallas was a song called"Don't Let Your Sweet Love Die". Trini befriended the famous recording artist Buddy Holly, a fellow Texan Buddy asked if he would like to meet his record producer in Clovis,New Mexico. Trini was elated and packed his station wagon with his group and drove to Clovis with the hopes of recording. Buddy Holly's record producer turned out to be prejudiced because of his heritage. He would not allow the use of Trini's real name on the record label. Trini's group agreed with the conspiracy against Trini's Latin name and they agreed not to allow Trini to sing on the record. The record was released as an instrumental under the name"The Big Beats". When Trini returned to Dallas,he disbanded the group and assembled a new band. While in Clovis, Trini befriended not only Buddy Holly but I also his band, The Crickets. As fate would have it,two months later,Buddy Holly was killed in a fatal plane crash i along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. A couple of months after the plane crash,Trini received a phone call from The Crickets asking him to come to Hollywood to be their lead singer. Trini was ecstatic, and instead of flying he used the money sent by The Crickets to drive his station wagon to Los Angeles. All through the two and half day trip,Trini kept saying to himself Hollywood or bust, Hollywood or bust!!! Trini arrived in H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D. The agreement Trini had with The Crickets did not materialize because The Crickets were enjoying their royalties and record sales fiom Buddy Holly's past hit recordings and were in no hurry to perform. The$200 Trini left Dallas with was gone. He had promised he would be sending money to his parents from his engagements in California. Out of desperation,Trini Lopez, the star was bom. Trini got a job at the Ye Little Club in Beverly Hills. He was hired with no group, just Trini and his guitar. His engagement was to last only two weeks and ended up lasting a year. . The first big break came at the popular night spot called PJ's in Hollywood. Here he was spotted by the world famous record producer, the late Don Costa, who then brought Trini to the attention of his longtime idol, the Great Frank Sinatra. Mr. Sinatra a fellow stylist immediately asked Don Costa to signed Trini to an exclusive eight year contract on Sinatra's Reprise Records. Reprise released his first album"Trini Lopez at PJ's" which became a No. I hit worldwide. Out of that album, • ' a single"If I Had a Hammer"became a No. 1 hit in thirty eight countries.
