A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA, IN SUPPORT OF THE
PALM SPRINGS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT'S
MEASURE "I" ON THE NOVEMBER 2016, GENERAL
ELECTION BALLOT ADDRESSING SCHOOL
INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS AND UPGRADES
THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
WHEREAS, Measure "I" is a local school improvement measure that will be on
the November 8 Presidential Election Ballot. If approved, Measure "I" will re -authorize a
portion of Measure E's general obligation bonds that were overwhelmingly approved by
voters in February 2008; and
WHEREAS, Measure "I" would continue the improvements begun in 2008 when
voters approved general obligation bonds dedicated to upgrading classrooms and
school facilities throughout the District; and
WHEREAS, Voter approval of Measure "I" will re -authorize $216.46 million in
Palm Springs Unified School District bonds, with a property tax levy with no increase in
total authorized District general obligation debt and at interest rates at or below legal
limits; and
WHEREAS, Measure "I" is smart planning that will enable Palm Springs Unified
School District to:
- Repair leaky roofs and fix leaky plumbing
- Repair classroom heating and air-conditioning systems
- Replace old portable classrooms with permanent classrooms
- Improve access for disabled students
- Upgrade fire and security systems to protect the children
WHEREAS, An independent Citizens' Oversight Committee must review and
audit all bond expenditures. By law, bond funds cannot be used to pay administrator
salaries, pensions or benefits. Legal safeguards prohibit the State from taking these
funds and spending them elsewhere.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF PALM SPRINGS SUPPORTS THE MEASURE "I" FOR THE PALM SPRINGS
UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.
