Subject: PSPD Data Concerns
Happy New Year. Being a single parent to a 3 year old makes it nearly impossible to attend city council
meetings. Please accept this email as my replacement to a public speaking opportunity.
I went on a ride along on 23 December 2016 with a PSPD homeless officer got to see first hand the relationships built
between PSPD &people experiencing homelessness. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the employees at
PSPD who are the epitome of community policing. However,I am concerned with the barrier I have come up against
in trying to get data on people experiencing homelessness and crime-from basic citations to arrests records. The data
tracking system PSPD uses does not allow for "homeless" indicator to be noted. Some of the administrators at PSPD
believe that because the system does not allow that status to be marked, it is not feasible. But, I am an outside the box
thinker. I called San Francisco PD,NYPD, & LAPD to see what they did to work around such a challenge. All 3
track homelessness crime.
The Homeless Task Force is creating a subgroup to discuss crime. Accurate data is imperative for such a subgroup to
analyze the impact on our city.
Food for thought,
Courtney
