Y A LM sp9 c IJ N + C'94501t `P City Council Staff Report DATE: June 7, 2017 CONSENT AGENDA SUBJECT: ACCEPT GRANT FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $17,010.99 FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, BUREAU OF JUSTICE ASSISTANCE FOR THE PURCHASE OF BULLETPROOF VESTS FROM: David Ready, City Manager BY: Police Department SUMMARY The Palm Springs Police Department has been awarded a grant in the amount of $3,515.08 for the 2015 grant cycle and a grant in the amount of $13,495.91 for the 2016 grant cycle, totaling $17,010.99, from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). These grants will reimburse the City of Palm Springs for 50 percent of the cost of each vest purchased under the program. RECOMMENDATION: 1. Accept the 2015 grant award in the amount of $3,515.08 and the 2016 grant award in the amount of $13,495.91, total amount $17,010.99, from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) for the purchase of bullet proof vests. 2. Authorize the City Manager to execute all necessary documents. STAFF ANALYSIS: The Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP), created by the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 1998, is a unique US Department of Justice initiative designed to provide a critical resource to state and local law enforcement. The program offers grant funds each year to law enforcement agencies that serve populations under 100,000 and will reimburse the City 50 percent of the cost of ITEM NO. 1- •d' City Council Staff Report June 7, 2017 -- Page 2 Bulletproof Vest Grant bulletproof vests for sworn officers. The Palm Springs Police Department must replace bulletproof vests every five years. Each bulletproof vest cost approximately $1200; therefore, the City's cost will be reduced by approximately $600 for each bulletproof vest purchased. The combination of both grants, with the matching funds, will provide 28 replacement vests. FISCAL IMPACT: The acceptance of the grants will return an amount not to exceed $17,010.99 to the General Fund for the purchase of 28 bulletproof vests. Bryan Reyes, Polic6�Chief e David H.
