Invasive Species : Aedes aegypti
• Threat:
— Bites during the day, aggressive
— Backyard breeder, prefers to feed on humans
— Capable of transmitting serious viruses e.g.,
chikungunya, dengue, Zika
• Detected in Palm Springs in November 2016
— Small area against mountain, about 200

— Detection and inspection area about 2,400

• Door-to-door teams evaluated infestation and aimed to
prevent spread of mosquito through education, removal of
sources, and mosquito control products.
— In 2017, 3,400 inspections conducted with invasive mosquito
detected at 212 properties

We need the community ' s help
To achieve long term results in reducing invasive Aedes in
Palm Springs, residents must be vigilant:
• Prevention:
— Eliminate potential breeding sources, such as water-filled containers,
from around home/workplace or change water frequently
— Common source in Palm Springs are saucers under potted plants,
bird baths, pet bowls; other sources could be discarded tires, any
items that could collect water 01 .�
