It is recommended that the city council accept a donation to the Palm Springs Police
Department's (PSPD) Mounted Police / Search & Rescue (PSMP-SAR) Team in the
amount of$35,000 from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Approve the acceptance of a donation award from the Agua Caliente Band of
Cahuilla Indians in the amount of$35,000.
2. Authorize the City Manager to execute all necessary documents.
STAFF ANALYSIS:
Founded in 1949, the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue (PSMP-SAR)
Team was formerly organized as a volunteer search and rescue unit for the greater Palm
Springs area. They are an auxiliary unit of the Palm Springs Police Department. During
the nearly 70 years of existence, PSMP-SAR has performed over 1,000 technical
rescues in the Indian Canyons and mountains surrounding the Palm Springs area.
When a 911 call comes into the Palm Springs Police Department regarding an injured,
lost, or dehydrated hiker, PSMP-SAR is called out to respond. They also perform urban
searches for missing children and at-risk adults. These rescues are performed by
horseback, hiking, off-road vehicles, and helicopter. Funding for PSMP-SAR is derived
primarily from private donations, fund raising, and the generosity of the Agua Caliente
Band of Cahuilla Indians.
On December 8, 2017, the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Team was
one of five recipients of donations from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians
during the 8'h annual Agua Caliente Charity Golf Tournament. PSPD Chief Bryan Reyes
MM INO. :-•10
accepted the donation (check) on behalf of the PSMP-SAR Team.
FISCAL IMPACT:
These monies will be used specifically for PSMP-SAR related equipment, training, etc.
There will be no impact to the General Fund and no matching funds are required to
accept this donation.
